Star Wars Doughnut Decorating Brunch

Our house is all abuzz with the Friday release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  As a mother of boys, my life revolves around 3 things, LEGOs, superheroes, and Star Wars™.   Everything has revolved around the franchise ever since dad introduced them to the original trilogy as little boys.

They've done it all, from Darth Vader and Stormtrooper costumes to toys and owning all the video game incarnations.  Every object became a lightsaber and duals were a daily occurrence, complete with the schvrmmmmmm! and kwishuuuuuu! sound effects. In fact, my mom just sent the little one a Darth Vader Mr. Potato Head for his birthday.

With the boys' annual Christmas party just this past weekend, of course the theme was Star Wars.  Today, I'm sharing another way to party with the Force before you head out for a matinee showing with the kids and a few friends...a doughnut decorating brunch.

With various toppings from Star Wars™ cereals, fruit to candy sprinkles, spend the morning decorating and eating doughnuts. Served along with Star Wars™ Go-Gurts and milk, we'll be energized and ready to head to the theater.

First, head to Walmart for your party needs; pick up a few boxes of specially marked Star Wars™ cereals like Honey Nut Cheerios®,  Cookie Crisp® and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal®.  Not only are they great for topping doughnuts, each box has a special toy viewer with a scene from the movie.

I love using cake doughnuts and maple bars for decorating.  They are sturdy enough to withstand frosting and toppings.  Armed with large popsicle sticks for spreading frosting, let their creativity run wild with their sweet creations.

Next, you will need toppings to dress up your doughnuts.  There are so many ways you can go...
  • mini marshmallows
  • cereal
  • candy stars
  • sprinkles
  • chocolate candy pieces
  • blueberries
  • raspberries
  • sliced strawberries
  • sliced bananas
  • peaches
  • coconut flakes
  • white and chocolate frostings
  • crushed nuts

I deliberately didn't want my table to scream the theme...themed partyware can be very expensive and if you have items left over, they are hard to reuse for another party.  It is fun to use them but you can also set the tone with a few items like plates and cups and supplement with solid colored and generic items.

I layered the plates with fun star plates as chargers and used black and white cups with star patterened straws. You know they are perfect for the holidays and will carry you through New Years.  Of course, using black and white items reinforces the whole Light Side/Dark Side of the Force. And stars.

I love to cover my party tables with wrapping paper or butcher paper. Not only is it a great way to coordinate your table, it makes cleanup a snap, especially when sprinkles and frosting get everywhere.

My biggest trick of having a plethora of reusable partyware like cake stands and bowls makes any occasion special.  It's ok if you don't have many cake stands; use what you have like dinner plates and platters.  Turn small bowls upside down and set your plates on them for more height.

What a fun way to spend the morning before heading out to see the new movie, no cooking required! I hope you have been inspired to host your own pre-movie watching event.
