January 22, 2022 - The Path ahead

Now just a reminder that the prior update was intended as information. For those who have been through similar Treatment, well done and I understand some of what you have gone through. For those who have not but may have friends or relatives who have gone through treatment perhaps this will give you a better idea of the struggles they went through and what they overcame as part of their treatment. And not to be cruel, but some may face something similar in the future and perhaps this will better prepare you to face it and to know that as unpleasant as it can be it is endurable. Always keep your eyes on God and accept His care for you and always keep in mind what the end-goal is.

So on with the update. Today is day 95 since the transplant!! That means next Thursday the 27th will be day 100, time for the 100 day biopsy. If the biopsy comes back well then that triggers the weaning off of the immune suppressant, the next major step in the process. After that our need to travel will be reduced to every other week and we will be able to have bloodwork done locally every other week. Now I won't try to pretend that this means all my troubles are behind me as their are still issues that can arise but these are major steps forward and I am grateful to reach these milestones. I will confess that every day is a struggle now but for all good reasons. I have energy, I have an appetite (and my taste buds are more and more awake every day) so when something needs to be done I know I CAN do it and if there's something I want to do I CAN do it. The problem comes in SHOULD I do it and I have to ask that question multiple times a day and too often the answer is NO!!! so, you know, behave and be happy with baby steps. As problems go I suppose this one is most tolerable even if inconvenient.

If all goes well it's possible that the immunity suppressant will be done by April or it could take into October if the Graft vs Host disease needs attention. We'll roll with whatever comes and wait for the day when I can start getting all my (childhood) immunizations started. It's an odd thing to be looking forward to but the sooner that happens the sooner we can migrate from extreme isolation to the 'simplicity' of Covid isolation. Strange to think that that step could be a vast improvement over current but truth is truth. If all of this hadn't happened we'd probably be spending far too much time complaining about Covid Restrictions and the like but after this COVID restrictions have lost a great deal of their teeth. For me. I will (almost) gladly walk into a place with mask on when I CAN walk into a place safely,

Once again thanks for your prayers, for your encouragement, and for your loving care through this craziness.

Day +100

Next big milestone! ONE HUNDRED!!

Jeff is in now for his biopsy.
We are anticipating the find of 100% Tuttle in his marrow. Results will be next week.

Had a chance to visit with a friend last night, from work. It was a real treat for Jeff!

PS - for those who haven't read this already. I AM SOOO grateful for the fact that we had the opportunity to live at home for the last several weeks. Had we done the transplant through Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo... Today would have been the day we moved back home.
