Vague Origins

Well, even as 'mature' as DNA analysis is, it's still in relative infancy when it comes to figuring out lineage and/or origins. Interestingly enough, pet DNA analysis is slightly better at identifying lineage simply because the tests are less expensive due to the simple fact that owners just want to know what the breed make-up is rather than caring about inherited diseases or about where they came from whereas humans want to know more about geographic origins, trait inheritance, and disease risks. I actually know more people who have had their pet DNA analyzed than have had personal DNA analyzed.

So, Queenie has been on a genealogy kick for a few years which is kinda funny because early in our marriage I set aside genealogy research because she felt I was wasting my time chasing ghosts. Funny how things change as we mature, eh?

So without further ado, for Christmas we had some DNA tested and the results were .... interesting, but not nearly as illuminating as we expected/hoped. Then again, every month the results are updated with new information so the data we have now is noticeably more detailed then it was when we first received our results. Translated, as more people have their DNA tested their result add some new granularity/clarity to those who were tested before. While there are many aspects to the testing I'm sharing just a segment of mine for the curious:

No big surprises here, mainly because I only got my ancestors roughly back to Scotland before suspending my search so many years ago. This analysis, while not giving specifics, shows the rest of what I SHOULD learn if/when I get back to working on this again.

Now for those who like to see more, here is Queenie's results:

And here is one daughters:

You can see bits of both of ours in our daughter's results and our other daughters results are noticeably different. The one thing that we saw for certain was that the daughter that is most like me in temperament and personality was closer in DNA origins to me and the daughter most similar to Queenie has more similarities in her DNA track.

Curiously we found that some of the trait testing is still in need of refinement. I have a condition where I sneeze repeatedly in bright sunlight and the same is true of one daughter. Interestingly, the DNA claimed neither of us should have that trait yet we both do so we filled out questionnaires that reflected which reported results were accurate and which were misleading. Again, as more data flows their testing will become more accurate.

And accuracy will be a good thing as testing matures, I grew up half a block from a family with fraternal twins who had their DNA tested only to find out they had a congenital condition that would lead to a potentially painful and early death. With this knowledge they are now receiving important treatment to suppress the condition and live better, longer lives. Sadly, they have an older sister who died prior to this testing and her symptoms matched the condition perfectly yet, since it is a rare-ish condition her doctor never was able to diagnose it. So there's possibly something to be gained for some.

But now someone else has the road-map to my basic biological make-up. I don't know how I feel about that ...... but I'm not nervous ... yet.
