Calvin Harris - This Is What You Came For (feat. Rihanna)

The first Song I have decided to critic is This Is What You Came For (feat. Rihanna) by Calvin Harris. I have decided to rate this song, on a scale of 1 through 10, a 3. This songs is not an enjoyable song, however, there are a couple things I can point out that were good about it. Here goes nothing.

The song begins with a chorus:
Baby, this is what you came for. Lightning strikes every time she moves and everybody's watching her, but she's looking at...

Then the refrain:
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh,
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
Oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh

I can already tell that this is going to be some stupid song you hear in a club. The girl that everyone wants is looking at you. Okay, big deal. Now, let me just say, I hate music that has constant "oh's" and "ooo's". This song literally consists of a minute and forty-eight seconds of vocalization. There are some times that you can appreciate vocalization, but when most of the song consists of it, then there is a problem.

The chorus and refrain are repeated again. So we learn no new information in the first minute of the song. Next, we get to something different. Thank you. Here's the one and only verse in the entire song:
We go fast with the game we play
Who knows why it's gotta be this
We say nothing more than we
I say "your place" when we leave

So now this girl is asking to go to your place when it is time to leave the club. Great, now you get to fuck the hot girl that everyone wants. But isn't that a little too fast? Like, seriously, I get that you guys want to "go fast" in this game you're playing, but seriously?

To end the song, the chorus and refrain and repeated twice! That was it. A bunch of vocalization, annoying song lyrics, and Rihanna. The final negative thing that I want to discuss is the fact that the general chord progression is Am, F, C, G. There are literally 130 different songs with this type of chord progression.

Now that we got passed all the negative things about this song, let me move on to the more positive things. This song is indeed a catchy tune. If I was at a club, I wouldn't mind listening to it in the background. If I was busy doing homework or something like that, then I most likely would be able to focus with it. To me, it feels like background music. I enjoy background music, but this song doesn't make me feel any real emotion, so it makes it a little harder to use in the background.

Rating: 3/10
