With what must be a nightmare artist name for search engines, Any Other is the stage name for Italian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adele Altro. Continuing the great lineage of songwriters that lay themselves emotionally bare, Any Other makes honest music with creative flair. Balancing acoustic and electronic elements, Any Other reminds me of artists like Mitski, Sufjan Stevens and Sarah Slean who can wildly flip between both sides and still sound consistently themselves.

Approaching their third album entitled ‘stillness, stop: you have a right to remember, Adele wanted to tap into self-discovery. The album talks about gender identity, family and trying to recover memories lost during a traumatic life experience. Adele says “I feel like erasing memories served me somehow, but I also think that at some point I needed to take some time for myself to remember. I had the right to remember!” That dissection continues into the lead single ‘Awful Thread’, which tackles Adele’s relationship with their parents. As you can tell by the title – it hasn’t been a smooth ride. The track is quiet and unassuming but has some imaginative sound design. The rhythm sounds like car windscreen wipers in the rain. The string embellishments are warm and soothing whilst the subject matter stings. It sounds so thoughtfully put together and I’m eager to explore the rest of the album.
