Psychedelic rock duo Cari Cari has created easily one of the best singles for the summer of 2022. Stephanie and Alexander have released “Welcome to Kookoo Island” which is the title track from their forthcoming album due on the 16th of September. Fuzzier and hazier than their usual crisp psych-rock, the song leans into muddy cassette filters, anthemic vocal chants and euphoric blasts of guitar for the choruses between cute country twang verses. It reminds me of how The Go Team! distresses their music to sound old and warm – this does the same for festival rock. If you are a fan of this track, know that Cari Cari’s music is usually a bit more aggressive and less dreamy.

Usually, I write my own articles and convey my personal impressions only but Cari Cari’s Alexander has such a good description of their music and this song – I’m just going to copy it verbatim. “While Cari Cari was founded with the aim of placing their music in a Tarantino flick, ‘Welcome To Kookoo Island’ would probably be a better fit for Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom”. I love that and it’s totally accurate.
