With Tori Amos’ new album ‘Ocean To Ocean’ coming out on the 29th of October, there had been little information out about it until today. The cover art reminding me a little of Loreena McKennitt. That, along with the focus on ocean photography, made me wonder if we were getting a Celtic Cornish infused album. I think my guesses were… off base! With the lead single ‘Speaking With Trees’ out today, it seems we are moving to a new era of Tori which I can lazily describe to fans as Under Scarlet’s Invader. For those less entrenched in analysing every morsel Tori Amos puts out, it is a delightful return to a fuller band sound. Matt Chamberlin’s drums and Jon Evan’s bass return once again. As long time players on her records, it gives a certain dynamism that programmed music can sometimes lack. When paired with Tori’s ever-powerful piano playing and emotive vocals, it’s a winning combination.

‘Speaking With Trees’ speaks directly about coping with loss and refusing to let go. Allowing the memories of someone who has gone to comfort you rather than haunt you takes time and it’s one of those many things in life that you often can’t fully appreciate or understand until you join that club. I also really like how this song feels like a ticking clock of time speeding forward at a claustrophobic swirling pace. The single is out now and you can enjoy it below.
