Chart Rewind [Hot 100]: Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Love Don’t Cost a Thing’ Peaked This Week in 2001

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective segments, ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay,’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our latest feature –  Chart Rewind – serves as a variation of our Retro Rewind assay to salute an entire era of music history.

This week, we’ve got a thing for ‘Love Don’t Cost a Thing’ – the first single from Jennifer Lopez‘s sophomore album, ‘J. Lo.’

After the success of her multi-Platinum debut album ‘On The 6’, we can only imagine how much Team Lopez was dreading the pressure associated with the infamous “sophomore slump.”

At the time, the singer-actress was seeing her public profile skyrocket on the heels of hit films, music, fashion endeavors, and the legal and emotional woes that came with dating music mogul Puff Daddy (now known as Diddy).  The latter reportedly served in part as inspiration for ‘Love Don’t Cost A Thing’, the first single lifted from Lopez’s second offering, ‘J.Lo’.

Released at the tail end of 2000, the Ric Wake & Cory Rooney-produced tune told the tale of a woman disappointed by a suitor’s attempt to win her over with material things. Not only instantly winning her press over its Puffy inferences, ‘Love’ received just that at Pop Radio at the time of its release – a feat that hoisted it to a #46 premiere on the Billboard Hot 100.  By late February 2001, the song had hopped over 40 spots to its #3 peak (where it was found this week in 21 years ago).  It was her third top 10 hit.

Despite earning no love from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) or the Recording Academy/GRAMMYs, ‘Love’ would go on to be one of J.Lo’s biggest hits to date.  A fan favorite, the tune helped lead its parent album to sales of over 8 million worldwide.
