Weigh In: 2022 GRAMMY Nomination Snubs & Surprises

The music industry and its enthusiasts are still buzzing as Tuesday (November 23) brought with it the highly anticipated unveiling of the 2022 GRAMMY nominations.

Honoring the year’s best and brightest in the music realm on January 31, 2022, the coveted tally expectedly listed the likes of chart-toppers Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, Cardi B, Kanye West, Drake, and Megan Thee Stallion as competitors for the ceremony’s top honors.

But, while jaws dropped to see Tayor Swift, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, BTS, and more also mentioned alongside those hitmakers, some fan groups are steam pressed their favorites were placed in interesting categories or totally shut out.

Snub:  Miley Cyrus‘Plastic Hearts,’ Lorde‘s ‘Solar Power,’ Alicia Keys’ ‘Alicia,’ Sam Smith‘s ‘Love Goes,’ & Megan Thee Stallion‘s ‘Good News’ Completely Shut Out

Surprise:  Jon Batiste leads with 11 mentions while ‘Love For Sale’ – the latest duet album from Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett – sees its work mentioned 6 times despite submitting content for consideration on the very last day of nomination eligibility.

Snub:  Taylor Swift‘s ‘Evermore’ (only nominated for Album of the Year) and Ariana Grande‘s ‘Positions’ (only nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album) only garner 1 nod each.

Surprise:  Justin Bieber‘s ‘Justice’ nabs the most nods he’s ever had for one project (8 total).

Snub:  Normani, Chloe Bailey, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion Missing from Best Music Video category

Surprise:  Every nominee in the Best Spoken Word album category is Black (J. Ivy, LeVar Burton, Barack Obama, Don Cheadle, and Dave Chappelle).

Snub:  BTS have some of the year’s biggest hits, but only managed to get mentioned once in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category.

Surprise:  Selena Gomez – normally overlooked by the Academy – finally scored her first nod as the Spanish-language EP ‘Revelación‘ was recognized in the Best Latin Pop Album category.

Surprise:  Saweetie mentioned in Best New Artist category

Snub:  Migos missing from the nods list all together.
