Ryan McGeorge -- Victrola

I was listening to The Brass Junkies this past week and really enjoyed their interview with Ryan Mcgeorge (https://www.brassjunkies.com/episodes/tbj218).

Here is a link to Ryan's webpage where your can listen to Victrola on either Spotify or Apple Music, but you can also find it on any streaming service (I use YouTube Music). Hope you enjoy!

Any thoughts? Somewhat unrelated to the music I really like the cover art. It looks so peaceful and cozy and I think matches the vibe really well. More related to the music, overall I really like it and I am looking forward to listening to the full album when it comes out. To be honest, there are some questions that I ask myself when I listen to this, like "Is this smooth jazz?", "Do I like smooth jazz?", "Do I really like this or do I just think it is cool because it is euphonium?".

Regardless of how to place this into a "genre", I think ultimately it is music, and there are some really enjoyable things. I think the groove is really nice, I think the rhythm section adds a lot and I love the combo of the drum set with the euphonium. I really like the effect pedals and how they contribute to the sound of this music. And one thing I really like that probably most characterizes how I feel about this recording, I think it is great to hear the euphonium used in different ways playing original music outside of the "traditional" euphonium roles. I think things like this could go a long way to introducing cool music played on the euphonium to broader groups of people and also helps inspire all of us to think outside the box a bit with our instrument!
