How to start a band

Tags: band

If your passion is music and you love playing instruments, or you are just a talented singer and you not into a solo career, you should consider forming a Band. You can be a member of a cover band or a band that create original songs. Either way, you will be able to enjoy it and what's better is you can earn from it. But how are you going to start a band. Here are the tips that can get you started on you way to rock and roll.

1. Choose you Genre

Before finding other members, you should first consider the type of genre that you want your band to play. Why? Well, it will be just easier for you to find other members with the same genre as you if you will first think of the genre that you are going to play. If you like playing Power Metal Songs, you would likely to attract band mates with the same type of genre as you.

Based on my experience, it became a very big problem when I looked for band members first not considering what type of music they want to play. It only ended up disbanding because we cannot agree on what are we going to play.

So, before you post ads for auditions, consider this one first. It will ease you up for finding other members.

2. Look for Band Members

A typical band is composed of a lead singer, at least one guitarist (can act as the rhythm and lead guitarist), a bassist and a drummer. Other bands are composed of two guitarist (one rhythm, and one lead). Keyboardists are also common in most bands existing right now. This will depend solely on you because you will be the one to form a band. That band should be the one that you really want to form.

You can print advertisements and post it on walls saying that you are looking for band members. Please include you genre so they will know what kind of band you're forming.

Another method is to advertise on social media. There are facebook groups that are intended for those who are looking for a band, or band members. You can post your ads there and hope for someone to reply on your post.

Additional tip: Don't just look for professional players but also look for friendly people so that you can get along well.

3. Find a rehearsal space

After finding your members, you must look for a place where you can rehearse with you band. It should be a place where you can be comfortable of playing. The ideal size should be as big as a garage.

You can first try playing with each other in a band rehearsal studios. The only thing is, you have to pay an hourly rate and this can be frustrating if you don't have enough budget for this.

The advantage of having your own rehearsal space is that you can practice whenever you want, without thinking of the time.

4. Think of your unique Band Name

A serious band will have to come up with a unique band name. It has to be unique because it will be you identity. And another thing is, you can be on a sued for taking a name of an existing band.

(Don't worry, I will make a blog post on how to come up with a unique band name. Please be patient on this. Thanks.)

5. Start writing songs (for those who want to create an original. If you want a cover band then just ignore this one)

Very few cover bands get the spotlight. Only if they show their uniqueness that stands out, then they will be able to have a large concert and tours.

But most of the famous bands right now, are not cover bands. They create their own songs. So if you want to be on the center stage with people shouting you band name, then create a song that you can call your own.

Signature songs are those songs that if heard by people, they will think about your band. So if you are to create a song or an album, make sure that it is pleasant to the ears of the listeners.

(Again, I will also make a blog on how to write songs.)

6. Promote your band and your songs

One you have created a song or an album, you are now ready to promote it. There are different ways on how you can promote you songs.

One is social media. You can create a facebook fan page and upload you songs there.

You can also make a short clip of your song using the Quipsphere Mobile Application.

Another one and I think the most famous way is Youtube. With millions of users around the world, Youtube.com is one of the best ways to promote you original songs.

7. Submit you demo tapes on a record label

Choose a record label that you like and send your recordings to them. You can be rejected but that is not the "end of the world" for your band. Do not be afraid of rejection. It is just another way of saying that you should do better. Just trust on everything that God can do for you. Always pray. Try and try until you succeed.

I hope this is helpful. Please leave a comment below and don't forget to follow this site.
