“The snow was endless, a heavy blanket on the outdoors; it had a way about it. a beauty.”

My phone is charged. My lantern has new batteries. My larder is full. I’m ready for the coming storm. We are under a blizzard watch. Winds could reach 65 MPH, but the amount of snow is still iffy. It depends on how the storm moves, its exact track and timing. From one direction we could get up to 2 feet, from the other way, a bit less. Either way, the threat is for significant snow, potentially damaging winds, and coastal flooding, the trifecta of epic storms. I am going to bring in the cow and the donkey. I may also make brownies. I have a hankering for chocolate. I wish there was a chocolate shop which delivered.

I particularly remember one snow storm. I had to have been about nine or ten, still young enough to love the snow. Back then, the snow plows never really really got down to the road. There was always a layer of hard-pack snow, perfect for sledding. I lived almost to the top of the best hill. I’d pull my sled behind me to the top, pick it up and jump on it, belly first once the runners hit the ground. My feet were in the air. I’d steer by the wood attached to the blade at the front but mostly my sled just went straight down the hill. It was a glorious ride.

I remember building an ice cave in the high, high piles left on the side of the road by the plow. We dug out rooms and threw water on the walls so they’d be solid ice. I remember sitting in one of the rooms having a lunch my mother had made us and eating from a brown bag. We played in that cave almost every day. We even played board games in the bigger ice room. When the winter passed, the snow piles left by the plows were the last to melt, and our fort was the last of all to disappear. Its walls of solid ice lasted until the end. It was almost summer before they finally disappeared.

Monsieur Fred Hamster: Chantal Goya

I have no idea what the lyrics are, and I don’t really care. I looked a long time for hamster songs today. They are awful, most of the ones I found, and I admit today’s offerings have a couple of those. Two might be tolerable. No judging. Go with them. They are sort of fun in strange, maybe even weird, ways.

This is an easy song to hate because most songs about hamsters are easy to hate.
