“You never get away from that thing in your hometown that it has over you. You don’t outgrow where you come from.”

Sun!! We have sun this morning. The sky is blue. There were a few clouds, but they have disappeared. I need to get out to take advantage of the day. The rain will be back tomorrow.

I am into creature comforts. In the winter my House is warm, not hot, but warm enough that a sweatshirt or even a flannel shirt will do. My toilet paper is three ply. I use light cream in my coffee. My slippers are warm and cozy. I buy Kerry Gold butter and Kewpie mayonnaise. I just finished my Blue Mountain coffee. I have people. I treat myself well.

Growing up in a smallish town when I did gave me the best childhood. I was free to roam. My mother never worried. I knew all the best places like the junkman’s house, the town stable and the field with the horses. The best blueberry bushes were close to my house. The firemen used to sit on wooden chairs outside the firehouse. They were always glad to say hello. At Christmas the firehouse was outlined in lights, and Santa climbed a ladder to the top of the chimney. The Square was a wonderful place filled with all sorts of stores. You could buy fish, bread and cakes, men’s and children’s clothing and vanilla cokes at the drug store. You could have your shoes resoled. We had a diner just a bit below the square, a wonderful place. My father sometimes took me there for breakfast. He always gave me a dime to play the table jukebox. I’d flip and flip until I found just the right song. My friends and I used to go to the diner after drill practice for brownies in chocolate sauce.

My sister still lives there. When I visit her, I always drive through the square. Many of the old buildings are still there. The diner isn’t.
