I don’t want you to worry too much about this, but most of the music that you listen to or even create is bound to fade into the mist of time. In fact, most songs aren’t even designed with the purpose of enjoying a lasting legacy. Some are afforded this by some kind of cosmic accident, while a few, like patriotic sports anthems, are created specifically for events that cyclically come around.
It’s hard to know if Gary Hubber is aiming for immortality with “Davina” or if he is merely trying to echo the sound of songs that have achieved this status. There are no clear coordinates that can be used to reach such a prize. If there were, everyone would be out there with a shovel, trying to dig up some pop gold.
Finding inspiration in the vintage and the retro sector of the music store, Gary Hubber writes a kind of doomed love song on “Davina” that could be easily covered by many. Why am I confident of this? Well, the surf-rock guitar parts are quotable, the lyrics fly off the tongue, and the melodies are something that a soulful singer might want to attempt. You can never tell with classics, but Hubber certainly has laid his name on the big list on the wall with this one.

The poets had every reason to hate the rock n’ rollers and songwriters with a guitar. They were, after all, responsible for stealing their fame and guiding the wall down a path of pop junk that we will never escape. But once worse came worse, the poets and the rockers were in the same boat. Savagekind’s “1:23” is poetry-rock that will reveal itself to anyone willing to fall into its trance.
Poets and rockers are, usually, two very different kinds of artistic insurgents. The first like to read books, to dress shabbily, and to tell their admirers that the world is not as it appears to be and that this should give everyone a reason to worry. The latter don’t like to read anything besides the instructions on their shampoo bottles, dress expensively and shabbily, and believe that the world is exactly as it appears to be and, thus, we should enjoy it while it lasts.
Savekind’s “1:23” is an alt-rock recitation in the vein of Nick Cave. Whatever revelations are here, they’re for every listener to sit through and find for themselves. It’s not pop music meant to help you cut corners or do you any favors. The world is as it appears and isn’t at the same time, and a bit of uncertainty never hurt anyone anyhow.
