There’s great tragedy and adventure in everyday life. It’s just that these stories rarely find the right director. If we all had Martin Scorsese in our minds, all of our common tales of joy and woe would have a completely different gravitas. Sonic Blume tries to step behind the camera and get a slice of regular life to look like a Greek tragedy.
If anything, alternative rock may just be the best genre for doing this. It is, after all, music created, usually by regular people, wearing regular clothes and playing cheap, regular instruments. They are not inspired by fantasies of riding around in jet planes or slaying dragons. Their sadness and their brief moments of euphoria are just as real as those of a Roman emperor.
Sonic Blume’s “Falling Behind” is a tune that owes a lot to 1990s emotional alt-rock. It’s the music of the common man, complete with gigantic expectations and never-ending questions. It’s relatable. And the chugging wall of guitars, along with the surprising, slim vocal melodies, are designed to pull all listeners in.

I suppose that it’s only natural that most people will want to spend time in the company of others who are funny, charming and have a positive outlook on life. The British islands had a host of folks like this, and during the Britpop era, they were all in bands. The sunny disposition and pristine melodies have left a mark, and Lost Apollo is one of the songwriters to have been influenced by them.
Britpop was, in many ways, ol’ Limey’s Swedish pop moment. Like the Scandinavians, the Brits aren’t blessed with great weather or a very upbeat temperament. For a while, however, they were able to disguise it. The music coming out of the place was nothing like the grey reality of the booming streets. Instead, it was fun, colourful, full of zest for life.
Lost Apollo’s “Molly” is a tune that aims to reconnect audiences to the magic of the fabled three-minute single that British Guitar Bands Specialised in during the 1990s. It’s a song built on charm and excellent melodies. That’s quite a combination. And with this kind of spirit, whether played with full backing or on a busking session in the park, it’s hard to imagine people would decline to share in the moment with the young songwriter.
