EP Review: The Ram – It’s a Saturday Night

The Ram’s rootsy, The Stones soaking up the U.S.A. sound, is a testimony to the power of going back to the starting point whenever you find yourself feeling lost.

That’s not only a clever strategy. Judging by the discography of musical artists who’ve been around the block a few times over, it’s something that they must do. What can happen otherwise? Why, what happens to most – releasing an endless stream of uninspired, soulless songs that only barely echo the qualities of their early, best work.

Clearly, the singer-songwriter behind The Ram is searching for vitality instead. And he knows that won’t be found in merely reminiscing about the past and crying over the good old days? If there was something worth savoring about those times, then it needs to be unearthed.

“It’s a Saturday Night” is an anthem for people who sacrifice their time, egos, and, ultimately, lives for love. The musicians who go out every weekend needing to prove themselves in front of fresh audiences each time are the perfect examples of the idealists and their dreams with which the song is obsessed.

As the B-side instrumental proves, the song is built on the solid foundation of a Keith Richard-like riff and the Southern-tinged sounds that made The Stones’ early work such treasured heirlooms. The groove flows with the energy that will make you think I can go on forever. The lead guitar paints around the memorable rhythm track.

But it’s the gruff vocals that are designed to be the focus here. “It’s a Saturday Night” is, at its core, a soul-rock mix, and every line is delivered like a sermon for those who still believe in guitar music’s power to change, if not the world, a few lives.

The Ram believes in the song. And how could it be any different? It’s the things that you fight for that end up being the ones you love the most. And as “It’s a Saturday Night” hints, making good rock n’ roll is its reward.
