Through rough waters: Warm Demander and Mother Mersy | New alternative music review

Mother Mersy – Take You There

Genre: Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Garage Rock

“More is more!” This is the message that almost all hard-rockers triumphed during the 1970s trying to tell their fans. In other words, subtlety is good, but a stack of Marshall amps certainly has to be better. Or, at the very least, they have to be louder. Let’s face it, throughout rock’s history, it has usually been taken to be superior.

The hard rock made during the 1970s made people dream of great fortunes and fame. This amount of power and success was achievable through simple devices. One great guitar riff could make you a star. Lustful howling could get you on the cover of the world’s biggest magazines. And, decades later, judging the number of 1970s-produced records being sold, the math still holds up. Hard rock is innocent in its dedication to sin and excess.

Songs about cars and women don’t go out of style, although some wish that they did. It takes complete dedication to get this kind of feeling just right. Mother Mersy’s Take You There makes no apologies for the band members’ love for big, anthemic, silly hard-rock tunes. It’s a song that, fittingly, is molded around a titanic guitar riff. It features the kind of wailing that would want to make Ian Gillan go back to practicing scales. And, above all, just like being allowed to drive a monster car, it’s fun. Rockers are allowed that luxury, one that doesn’t belong to too many genres.

Warm Demander – Throw it Away

Genre: Stoner Rock, Grunge, Alternative Rock

Similar artists: Red Fang, Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Wolfmother, Black Mountain

Look, don’t bother telling me that there’s nothing new under the sun! You might start preaching about how the “golden years” of pop and rock music are well behind us. You might even dare to say that anything that comes out and sounds good is likely, just a rehash of a tune that already exists.

So what? Rock n’ roll was never meant to be the avant-garde of artistic taste. And, it was never supposed to be music that is listened to and enjoyed by people in suits cheering each other on the profits made in a new fiscal year.

If anything, rock n’ roll is an art that proudly embraces sex, thrills of all kinds, and a cavalier approach to taking ideas from a myriad of sources.

Warm Demander’s Throw it Away sounds like many tunes you might have heard. But it sounds like perfect pop-rock tunes that may have invaded your ear canals. There’s the matter of the cool baritone, the flowing melodies, and the clever orchestration that still makes this stand out. Don’t say that there’s nothing new under the sun. Just tell me if it moves you.
