A Case of Mistaken Identity – Again And

Genre: Punk, Garage Rock

Did you ever see audition tapes of actors vying for roles in big productions? They weren’t very good were they? The majority weren’t, especially if they were just starting out. That’s because they were just learning what their chosen field of work required. But, some of them got the job, and others went on to land even more important gigs. What was it that they had?

In most cases, casting agents, in moments of liquid honesty, that what they are looking for is not the finished product, but some kind of spark. Some would call it charisma, while others, mistakenly, will refer to it as talent. In other words, they are looking for people that are comfortable hamming it up in front of a camera, who look good in front of the camera, and who don’t knock down the furniture when they attempt to move for the camera.

A Case of Mistaken Identity’s Again And proves that the punk-rock band is made up of naturals, of people that will gladly live up to a state if the chance presents itself to them. Yes, their grievances aren’t very clear, and the writing can be further fleshed out. But, that can happen. Nobody can replace the spark that they certainly possess. At the end of the day, if you think that Johnny Rotten didn’t know how entertaining he must have been to housewives across Limey, you are mistaken.

Talk Heavy – Hoping The Middle

Genre: Pop Punk, Emo, Alternative Rock

Similar artists: Motion City Soundtrack, PUP, Violent Soho, Cloud Nothings, +44, Blink-182

Some of the greatest songwriters have compared the craft with which they were involved to doing a crosswords puzzle. The writer starts out with a lot of blank spaces. Then, based on their strategy, their free time, and their knowledge they slowly start filling in the blanks. Eventually, what seemed to make little sense in the beginning, paints a clear picture.

Naturally, there are also musicians, especially young ones, that will feel insulted by having their work compared to something so trite. After all, what they try and create is something spiritual, something that digs down to the very core of their mission in this world. However true this is, they’ll still need a verse, a chorus, or a bridge.

Sometimes rock tunes work best when they stick to a formula that the great songwriters have perfected. Talk Heavy’s Hopping the middle is a pop-punk tune that will not leave you feeling disappointed about the absence of hooks, memorable melodies, or a soulful performance. Sure, the band is looking to make you feel everything that they do, and at the same intensity. But, wisely, they also realize that it takes a well-structured tune to make you a believer in the first place.
