Newport Jazz Festival Reveals 2022 Lineup

Today the Newport Jazz Festival announced the lineup for its 2022 edition, which will take place as usual on the grounds of Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI, from July 29 to July 31. Among the headliners are Norah Jones, Esperanza Spalding, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Ron Carter, Maria Schneider, and Terence Blanchard† The complete list of artists announced today is below. In addition, the festival will be paying tribute to its founder, the late George Wein, with an all-star group of musicians to be named later. Wein presented the first Newport Jazz Festival in 1954; it was, in fact, the very first jazz festival—and now there are hundreds presented all across the globe every year.

The festival has always tried to present special ensembles and events, and this year is no exception. Christian McBride, the festival’s artistic director, will reprise his annual Jawn Jam with guests Makaya McCraven, Chris Potter, Vijay Iyer, Brandee Younger, and Mike Stern. (FYI: Jawn is a Philadelphia-based term meaning, well, thing). Jack DeJohnette will appear with his new quartet with Don Byron, Matt Garrison, and Luisito Quintero. And the Mingus Big Band will be there to celebrate the 100th birthday of the legendary bassist and composer, who (along with Max Roach) organized a protest among musicians against the festival in 1960 because they deemed it then to be too white and too pop. If Mingus were alive today, he would be hard-pressed to make that same claim; the current festival’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is self-evident.

3-Day General Admission Tickets and 3-Day Student Tickets are on sale today and can be purchased here† Single-Day Tickets and 2-Day Tickets will go on sale at a later date.
