RnBass Interview: Omarion Talks Fatherhood & Why “Reasons” Will Be His Best Album To Date

Omarion is giving fans so many Reasons to celebrate this summer. For the past two decade, the RnBass crooner has devoted his time to delivering quality music, on-screen projects and just recently, becoming a father.

For Omarion, daddy duty is just as much of a full-time gig and passion project as his career. But this isn’t the same B2K frontman we’ve grown to love. Over the last 20 years, Omarion has been able to show who he is as a singer, his ability to creative, and explore and explore other cultures.

The RnBass team recently had the chance to catch us up with O on what’s been going in his world. Omarion talked to us about his fifth stdio album, Reasons, his growth over the past few years, and fatherhood.

You’ve been dropping tons of new music lately. One of which have beenDistance / Body On Me.” How did those 2 songs come about?

Omarion:  “Distance” was pretty interesting. I was actually with the producers and when I heard the beat, it was something I had not heard before. The more I listened to it, the more I knew it was complex. Then we took it to the next level. We went all the way to South Africa to shoot the video and really brought that unique sound for the people. So that was definitely I really cool experience.

As for as “Body On Me,” I heard a demo that one of the writers had and was like ‘Oh that song has a lot of potential.’ Of course, I put my part of it and it was the wave. These two records and different but very much cohesive. Actually, “Body On Me” is one of my favorite songs. (laughs)

You’ve also been teasing fans with your new Reasons project on social media. Do you have any features on it and what can you tell us about that project?

Omarion:  I’ve been working on Reasons for about two and half years adding the right touch, sounds, and vibes to it. Reasons by far will be my best and most personal experience to music. I’ve been in the music business for so long that a lot of people don’t understand that a lot of these songs before were handed to me, and I used to just added my own take to it. But with Reasons, I feel that I’ve found my way through music. I’ve really worked really hard and it’s been a whole different creative process. Reasons will be a reflection of who I am, and that’s what I want the listener to take. To see and feel a connection with it.

One of the singles in the album called “Word 4 Word” (#W4W) is actually a short film as well and it’s dropping on July 7th. It also pays tribute to the culture and to Michael Jackson, who taught many of us the way of music. I really feel this is my story and I’ve truly taken part in it and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it.

Reasons is without a doubt a new chapter in your life and fans will see a new Omarion. Being that the album celebrates who you are as a whole and your culture, what does “Black Excellence” mean to you?

Omarion: “Black Excellence” is levels of greatness, and I think it’s time for people to politely acknowledge our ability to preserver. It also means to go through a large amount of pain and yet learn to smile. To find a new way and continue pushing.

Now I’m about take you back with this question but how do you feel about the 2017 Omarion compared to the 2002 B2K Omarion?

Omarion: I look at it as someone who’s so much experienced. This 2017 Omarion is much more appreciative of life, and the things that have come along. I understand more and are less judgmental. So definitely a more aligned Omarion. In most situations, you have to fight life and struggle to find happiness and that’s how I would compare it from 2017 to 2002.

You’re also a father as well. You have 2 kids, do you think that you’ll be passing the music torch to them down the road?

Omarion: Of course, I’m all about supporting and giving them the tools they need to grow and succeed. My kids will not only have a good advantage in life but I will be able to guide them through the process of life. However, if they want to do something other than music, I will be right there with them 100 percent regardless.

What’s next for Omarion? What would you like to continue in the near future?

Omarion: We definitely have the new album coming soon, as well as tons of new music. But along the way, I would like to venture into other things like open my own daycare, a boys and girls club, or a dance studio. But there’s so much to get done first, and honestly, the future is just the future. We’re going to continue pushing day by the day, and see where it takes us.
