Here’s How To Belt – The Correct Way

It’s so funny!

I see so many YouTube vocal coaches and beyond that have videos out on “How to belt”.

Why it is humorous for me is because when you actually listen to them “belt”, they don’t know what the heck they’re talking about, and yet some of these videos have thousands, tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of views.

I’m sorry to make a crude comment here, but some things must be said.
There’s an old joke and the joke is this: “Eat sh*t, 1 million flies couldn’t be wrong!” (ha ha ha).

There are so many things I want to say on the subject that I’m going to keep this simple for those that are sincerely interested in learning how to Belt Correctly.

The very, very first thing is understanding true abdominal Diaphragmatic Support.

You can comb YouTube and see all these videos on Diaphragmatic support.

You’ll see people showing their stomach expanding and contracting as though they are actually demonstrating real diaphragmatic breathing.

And yet none of them sound like they have a “tiger in their tank” when they sing.

I want you guys to really listen for this. When you hear Pavarotti, Placido, Caruso, and so on, sing, you will hear that the core of their sound sounds like it’s coming from their stomach. Not from their chest, not from their neck, not from their throat, but from the core of their abdomen.

Then and only then can we discuss belting.

If any of you want to look this up, you can look up old quotes by Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale and they both refer to singing completely from their stomach.

Other than KTVA, I have not heard one single vocal coach on YouTube (or any of their students), with this genuine core strength sound, that is the only sound that could possibly sustain belting without injury.

So even if there are videos in which someone is shouting for a moment, this is not belting, and this is absolutely not sustainable over a three- or four-minute song (much less over 10 to 15 songs back-to-back, day-in and day-out).

In this video, I touch on the core elements of what it takes to truly belt correctly. For those that are interested in taking their studies further, in my singing course, I go into granular detail of this very important subject, which is the very building block and foundation for singing.
