Kansas City, Mo. — If there was ever any doubt about his availability for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, Patrick Mahomes That put an end to it.

“AFC Championship week,” the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback said of Sunday’s conference title game against the Cincinnati Bengals. “Ready to go.”

Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the first quarter of a 27-20 divisional playoff win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He returned to the game in the second half.

Coach Andy Reid said he expects Mahomes to participate in a full practice Wednesday. Mahomes said the ankle has improved since the game against the Jaguars.

“Good,” he said. “I’ve had a few days of treatment, a few days of rehab. I’m excited to get out on the practice field and test it out and see where I’m at. But so far I’m feeling good.

“After the game I felt better than I thought I would. It definitely hurts to move it during the game. But after the game, I was able to rest it and cool down and do different things like that. I felt a little bit better, the next morning I felt a little bit better, and then I went through the rest of the week. I was fine, so we’ll see how I feel in training today.”

Mahomes’ style of play changed after returning to the game against the Jaguars. He led the league in passes from outside the pocket during the regular season, but didn’t throw like that in the second half.

It’s his second half this season that he hasn’t thrown outside the pocket. Mahomes said he expected to work around the injury against the Bengals.

“I just have to find ways to push and be able to make throws the right way,” he said. “I’m going to push it a little bit today and then the day after tomorrow and see what I can do again. Don’t aggravate the injury again, obviously, but push it to see what I can do. Sunday.”
