Update Monday, August 22 at 9:20 am

TRUCKEE — Divers searching for 16-year-old Keely Rodney said Sunday they found a car with a body not far from where he attended a large party weeks ago. The FBI remained at the scene as authorities worked to confirm its identity, officials said.

Volunteers from the group Adventures with Purpose said they found Rodney of Truckee inside his car on Sunday, which they said was upside down under about 14 feet of water in Prosser Reservoir. In their message on Facebook, the family was informed. A website set up by his family updated on Sunday that the search had been suspended due to unconfirmed reports.

Authorities are yet to identify the body.

“We believe this is our missing person,” Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon said during a press conference Monday. “We wanted to make sure the family had that information first.”

Adventures with Purpose also held a press conference on Monday morning.

“Hold on to your loved ones a little tighter,” said Nick Rinne with the dive team.

“Without your support, none of this would be possible,” said Doug Bishop, of Adventures with a Purpose.

Rodney was last seen on Aug. 6 at a party near the Prosser family camp in Truckee with hundreds of other youths, police said.

His friend Sammy Smith was at the party with him and said Rodney had planned to spend the night at the campground.

“I knew she wasn’t in the right frame of mind or condition to drive. If she had, she wouldn’t have gone very far,” Smith told KOVR-TV.

Friends and family feared he had been kidnapped. His phone was out of service after the party and his 2013 silver Honda CRV was missing. Marine units from three local sheriff’s offices searched the reservoir. The search expanded to a wide swath of California and Nevada and involved at least 16 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Dozens of family and friends have searched and offered a $50,000 reward.

Adventures with Purpose — an underwater sonar search and rescue dive group that helps families find people — said in a Facebook message Sunday that it had found 16-year-old Keeley Rodney.

A statement issued around 3:30pm on Sunday said: “The car is upside down in only 14′ of water. We have confirmed that the key is inside. The family was notified. Law enforcement is on their way.

“We’ll be on the scene for the rest of the day, live stream tomorrow, and announce what time this afternoon.

“Thank you to everyone for your support and donations for bringing us here to help Keeley and her family.”

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said it was aware of the information on Facebook and that staff were on their way to meet with the dive team and would get more information later.

Sheriff’s spokesman Andrew Trike said in an email that he had nothing else to share at this time.

Rodney was last seen August 6 at a reception at the Prosser Family Campground at 12:30 p.m. About 200 to 300 young men and women from the region and the Bay Area reportedly attended the party. According to authorities, the last cellular data from Rodney’s phone came at 12:33 a.m. that day.
