You’re obviously very young, and in our opinion, also very talented. How did you get started with music? What was your inspiration?
I’ve always loved to sing. My brother and I are a team and we just make Music together. I never really had a starting point as a vocalist, it just came naturally to me. I sing all the time. Being in a choir since I was 8 probably helped with my vocal technique as well. I started writing music when I was 12, just like my brother. My whole family is super musical, and it is a big part of our lives. When I was little we would listen to my dad’s mixtapes, and I was influenced by that as well.

Artists you are Influenced by?
Lana Del Rey, AURORA (she’s so like, crazy, I love it), Lapsley are some of my key influencers. I’m also really into hip hop, and so artists like Tyler The Creator, Odd Future, ASAP Rocky, Drake, Keith Ape, Goldlink, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Frank Ocean are acts I enjoy listening to.

How do you come up with production? How was “Ocean Eyes” created?
I’m in a dance company, and one of my teachers asked me to create a Song with my brother so that he could choreograph to it. That is how “Ocean Eyes” came to life. Finneas had written it and asked me to sing it. We based the production off of what would work for lyrical and contemporary dance. I sang the bridge backward and we thought that was cool, so kept it. We put in beats that would work for choreography, as it was our main focus.

Finneas is really great at production. I’m still learning how to make it work with the vocal counterparts.  I have a strong opinion of what I want the sound to be but I’m still learning how to get it. He really does cool stuff though, and knows what I like.

What genre of music would you categorize your own efforts as?
We call the genre gloom-pop, or melatonin-pop, which roughly translates to a sound that is sad and minimalistic but still has a pop edge to it. I really enjoy bass, so I try to make my songs extra bass-y.

This is the question everyone is itching to ask, when are you releasing more tracks?
We have about 15 songs that we haven’t recorded, but have written. We have a few we’re supposed to put out soon. There will be a single released in the next month or so, and an EP/album that will follow.

How do you manage school and music?
I’m homeschooled, so there’s that [laughs]. Homeschool makes things a lot of easier when you are in the arts. The way our family does it is we get taught things that actually matter in life. We learn things when they come up, and take classes in various places. I feel like there are so many redundancies when it comes to the thing taught at school, and learning things that actually matter, or that you are really interested in, is a great fit for me. Music is what I am most interested in, so my family always made a lot of time for that (concerts, choir, family music classes, Grammy museums, etc.)

Interests outside of making music?
I love to dance, and did gymnastics for nine years. I used to be very athletic but then injured myself, so I am in physical therapy now, but hope to be back at dance soon. I also enjoy doing aerial arts.

Ever planning on playing gigs inside/outside of the US?
I had two secret gigs, just to get the feel of doing live shows and working things out with the band. I would love to eventually go on tour around the world. That would be really sick.

I actually noticed that your song has elements of love integrated deeply within, what are your songs actually about?
Like you said, the ones released as of right now have an underlying theme of love. There are about four songs that are about murder in the works right now [laughs]. It’s awesome to write songs about fictional things. Being able to express what you can imagine through art is pretty cool, at least for me.

What do you use to find new music?
I search for music very frequently, mostly on Soundcloud, Spotify and Vine. Depending on my mood I will find cool new songs. I hear a lot of new music at dance too, for choreographers tend to have great music.

Some artists you were able to collaborate with?
I was able to collaborate with Astronomyy, Emmit Fenn and (almost) play a show with Blackbear. Blackbear wanted me to come out and do a show with him, so I got to rehearse, but ultimately couldn’t perform, because of my age and the sponsors. I loved meeting him though.

Tell us more about your brother.
His name is Finneas O’Connell, and he’s basically my best friend. We’re very much alike, and share similar interests. Such as creating music, like I mentioned before. We tell each other everything, and like to hang out. He has a band called The Slightly’s, and they’re really, really good. He’s been in the band for five years and is the frontman. On top of that, he is an amazing songwriter and I love working with him.

How do you feel about people noticing you on the street?
It’s a surreal experience to have someone walking down the street recognize me.

What was the idea for your music video of  “Ocean Eyes”?
The video was intended to be very simple but visually interesting and arresting. I really liked the blue on my hands and face and felt like that represented a lot of my feelings.

전 어렸을 때 부터 노래하는 것을 진짜 좋아했어요. 전 저의 친오빠와 함께 음악을 만들고 있어요. ‘보컬리스트’라는 타이틀로 작업을 시작했다기 보다는 자연스럽게 노래를 하다 여기까지 온 것 같아요 8살 때 시작한 합창 연습이 테크닉적인 면을 연습하는 데는 많은 도움이 됬을 거라고 생각해요! 작곡은 12살 부터 시작했고, 저희 가족 모두 음악을 너무나 사랑하기 때문에 이 점이 저한테 많은 영향을 줬을 거에요. 아버지도 늘 믹스테잎을 만드시곤 했고 전 그것들을 들으면서 자랐거든요.

영감을 준 아티스트는?

“Ocean Eyes”는 어떻게 만들어진 건가요?
저는 지금 어떤 무용단에서 활동을 하고 있는데, 어느날 저의 선생님 중 한 분이 안무에 필요한 음악을 만들어달라고 저와 오빠에게 부탁을 했어요. 그 작업이 저희 “Ocean Eyes”의 시작점이 됬어요. Finneas가 곡을 만들고 제가 보컬을 입혔어요. 음악을 만들면서 현대 무용에 어울릴만한 구성과 가사를 표현하려고 노력했는데, Finneas가 음악을 워낙 잘 만드니까 전 그것에 맞는 보컬을 입히기 위해 계속 배우는 중이에요. 저는 제가 스티브 잡스 같다는 표현을 종종 쓰는데(웃음), 무슨 뜻이냐면 만약에 Finneas가 만든 트랙을 들어보고 제 마음에 안들면 전 그냥 싫다고 바로 얘기해버려요. 문제는 그렇다고 그것을 어떤식으로 고쳤으면 좋겠는지는 저도 잘 모른다는 거에요.

친오빠에 대해 좀 더 이야기 해 줄 수 있어요? 어떤 사람인지 궁금해요.
Finneas O’Connell이 그의 이름이고, 저의 오빠이자 베스트 프렌드죠. 공통점도 많고 취향도 아주 비슷해요. 우린 서로 비밀도 없고 항상 같이 놀러다녀요. 그는 The Slightly’s 라는 밴드 활동도 5년 째 하고 있는데 진짜 좋은 트랙들을 만들어내고 있어요. 무엇보다, 그는 진짜 뛰어난 송라이터고 전 Finneas랑 작업할 때가 너무 너무 행복해요.

“Ocean Eyes” 뮤직비디오는 어떤 의도를 갖고 제작된 건가요?
굉장히 심플하면서도 비주얼적으로 사람들을 사로잡을 수 있는 것을 만들고 싶었어요. 저의 몸과 얼굴에 푸른 메이크업을 한 것이 이 노래에 담긴 제 감정들을 잘 표현했다고 생각해요!

자신의 음악을 특정 카테고리에 넣는다면 어디가 좋을 것 같아요?
저희는  gloom-pop 혹은 melatonin-pop이라고 정의 내리곤 해요. 좀 더 구체화하자면 팝처럼 대중적인 포인트 요소들은 있되, 사운드에서는 미니멀하고 음울한 느낌이 나는 음악이요. 전 베이스 소리를 굉장히 좋아해서 곡에 많이 묻어내려고 하는 편이에요.

학교랑 음악은 어떻게 밸런스를 맞춰 나가고 있나요? 쉽지 않을 텐데.
전 홈스쿨링을 하고 있어요! 이걸로 대답이 되지 않았나요?(웃음) 예술을 하는 사람에게 있어서 홈스쿨링은 여러가지로 도움을 주는 것 같아요.  저희 가족은 실생활과 관련된 것들로 부터 배움을 얻자는 사고방식을 갖고 살아가고 있어요. 새로운 것이 나타나면 그것에 대해 알아가고, 다양한 곳들로부터 영감을 받아요. 개인적인 생각으로는 학교의 교육은 너무나 더디게 진행되기 때문에 홈스쿨링을 통해 제가 정말로 흥미가 있는 것들을 배울 수 있는 환경을 만들 수 있다는 것은 저와 정말 잘 맞는 방식인 것 같아요. 전 음악을 가장 좋아하니까 제 학습 프로그램은 가족들과 함께 음악을 중심으로 짜고 있어요. 콘서트나 합창 체험, 음악 수업, Grammy박물관 등등이요.

음악 말고 좋아하는 것이 있다면?
춤추는 것도 좋아하고, 체조를 9년 째 해오고 있어요. 운동을 굉장히 열심히 했었는데 한번 심하게 부상을 당하면서 지금은 여전히 회복 중에 있지만 빨리 다시 춤을 시작 할 수 있으면 좋겠네요. 에어리얼 아트도 즐기는 편이에요.

미국 내에서 투어를 하거나, 해외 공연을 할 생각은 없나요?
사실 두 번 정도 비공개 적인 공연을 밖에서 하긴 했었어요. 밴드와 함께 라이브 공연을 시도해보고 싶었거든요. 세계를 돌며 공연을 하는 건 누구나의 꿈이겠죠! 언젠 가는 꼭 이뤄졌으면 좋겠어요.

Billie의 음악을 들어보면 사랑을 주제로한 가사들을 찾을 수 있어요. 어떤 것들을 노래하고 싶었는지 좀더 얘기해줄래요?
맞아요. 가장 최근에 낸 곡들을 사랑을 주제로 하고 있어요. 지금 작업하는 곡 중에는 살인에 관한 곡들도 네 개정도 있어요.  상상력을 발휘해 픽션 적인 요소들을 넣어 음악을 만드는 것도 너무나 재밌는 일인 것 같아요. 적어도 저한테는 그래요.

새로운 음악을 디깅 할 때는 어떤 것을 이용하는 편이에요?
주로 Soundcloud 랑 Spotify, Vine을 이용해요. 저의 그날 그날의 기분에 따라 찾고 싶은 음악들을 찾아가고 있어요.

콜라보레이션 작업을 함께 했던 아티스트가 있었는지?
Astronomy랑 Emmit Fenn과 함꼐 작업한 것들이 있고, Blackbear와는 거의 플레이를 같이 할 뻔 했지만 제 나이랑 스폰서쉽 문제 때문에 결국에는 불발됬어요. 그래도 저한테는 너무나 재밌는 시간들이었어요.

마지막으로, 아티스트에게는 조금 부담스러울 수 있는 질문을 해볼게요. 다음 릴리즈 계획은 어떻게 돼요?
아직 녹음은 못했지만 만들어놓은 트랙이 15개 정도 있어요. 최대한 빨리 릴리즈 하고 싶어서 몇 개는 금방 나올 것 같아요. 다음 달 즈음에 싱글을 하나 발표할 예정이고, EP 나 정규 앨범은 차근차근 준비할 생각입니다
