Foo Fighters Will Never Replace Taylor Hawkins

Many have wondered what a post-Taylor Hawkins era of the Foo Fighters would look like with Josh Freese being the new touring drummer, but not permanent drummer.

Where could the Foo go from here? Do they just become a legacy act, or is there something fresh on the horizon? If you ask me, I’m thinking that we’ll most likely see it all play out like the following within a five year span plan. Personally, I don’t see anyone taking the throne full time. I believe what will happen is we will see multiple drummers fill in for live shows and some appearances on albums.

For future live shows after 2023, I think we’ll see a rotation of drummers sitting behind the kit. This can range from legacy drummers to current drummers. I wouldn’t be surprised to see anyone from Travis Barker to Carmine Appice filling in for shows.

For albums, that’s going to be somewhat similar, but I see the Foo Fighters also going full circle here. I see Dave Grohl doing most of the album work behind the drums, which can add some interesting classic sounds. Hawkins and Grohl are very similar drummers, but also do have their own spin on songs. It would be really unique to hear Dave Grohl behind a kit again on more albums and doing the bulk of the work in the future, however, of course, I wish it was under different circumstances.

After some touring and after an album, which will have a decent amount of features, in my opinion because of the passing of Taylor – we will see the Foo become more of a legacy act. I would argue that they are now, but they are also still one of the most relevant rock bands around currently.

After a legacy tour or two, I do believe that the Foo Fighters will either retire or spread out more and do more solo projects. That’s worst case scenario, of course. Hopefully, the Foo are here to stay, but something tells me that it’s just not the same energy without Taylor and it will be hard to continue forward in the long term.
