Preparations and Routine

Often times I’m amused how my preparations for running often mimic my preparations for learning or composing new music. Lately I’ve been trying to incorporate a new routine that allows me to complete everything I need to undertake during the day. Planning, flexibility and balance is definitely key. I also can’t neglect being in the moment. Right now I’m trying to find the proper balance where I’m not too tired physically that I can still focus mentally.

I feel that my starting base with running is going well. I’m feeling strong enough to begin increasing mileage and I feel that my goal times will come more in reach as I continue to work. I’m fortunate to have a coach to help as well as my wife, who supports me 100%. I find that doing a lot of the little things, such as stretching or form drills, really do go a long way into making yourself become a better runner. The strength training is helping my endurance as well. By breaking everything down, I can see my weak points. This really helps me with what I need to work on to stay injury free and to run fast with ease.

Though I just discovered running, I’ve been playing music for some time now. It’s important for me to keep working on my skills as a guitarist and composer. I do not want to fall into a trap of playing what I know solely out of convenience. Does it work? Sure, but I feel that there is so much more ground for me to cover. As with running, I still have to run the same drills on the guitar to not lose my chops. I’m also challenging myself with learning new exercises and revisiting old concepts that now have new meaning to me. I’m looking forward to sharing these down the road when I’m ready.

Though it may sound boring or even crazy to some, I’m really enjoying this process. I’ve had a good 2015. I’m looking forward to finishing up the year and to achieve some lofty goals in 2016.
