An album out today from Hungarian keyboardist and producer Zságer Balázs, Aqua Obscura showcases a gripping atmospheric journey — from the caressingly lush deep-sea mystique of opener “Alámerül” to the pulsing, foreboding theatrics within “Pagana Rito.”

The dynamic tonal presentation is befitting of an album inspired by water, and the mystical folklores and rituals surrounding the element. The artist, who is also the mastermind of the band Žagar, stirs with this solo endeavor — per the artist, incorporating “ancient Hungarian folklore, Nordic legends, and Pagan mythology,” amidst explorations of connections between water and humanity.

Aqua Obscura impresses with its consistently engaging soundscapes. “Sötét Viz” evolves from quaint water trickling into zapping percussive effects and a space-y lingering, resembling the setting to an underwater alien base. Meanwhile, “Viztündér” exudes a meditative-fit charm, intertwining gentle synth pulses and twinkling keys with a swaying tempo reflective of water’s current. Aqua Obscura is a compelling success from Zságer Balázs.
