When Hush Falls – ‘Clean Slate’ EP

Ranging from anthemic rock to serenely hypnotic contemplation, the Clean Slate EP is a success from When Hush Falls. The project comes via Rajarshi Boro, an artist based in Guwahati, India. Four years in the making, the EP’s creative process found Boro honing his skills in learning bass, keyboard, and drum programming, with a major focus on mastering music mixing and DAWs through online courses.

Frolicking acoustics and sporadic guitar textures surround a tender vocal presence on the opening “This Place,” exuding a time-jumping thematic approach in its references to various phases of life — to one’s assuming of their “old man shoes,” to more child-like whimsies. An atmospheric guitar line is especially compelling into the two-minute mark. The ensuing “Blue Skies Yellow Lands” struts a greater ’80s nostalgia, weaving nostalgic guitar reverb alongside yearning vocals for a melodic post-punk and new-wave intertwining. A soaring chorus satiates following the atmospheric verses.

“Be Here Now” is a standout centerpiece. Balmy guitar twangs and soothing vocals lead a blissfully atmospheric stirrer, bridging the moody engrossment of “Blue Skies Yellow Lands” with the anthemic outpouring of “The Things You’ve Seen.” EP finale “Meadows” ushers in a more acoustic-friendly tone, capping the release off with a captivating sense of retrospection. The Clean Slate EP is a riveting showcase in atmosphere and heartfelt songwriting from When Hush Falls.

“Be Here Now” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
