Sugartin – ‘Breakdown’ EP

The Breakdown EP is a stellar output from Sugartin, a dreamy synth-pop duo from Stuttgart, Germany — embracing a self-described arsenal comprising “one voice, two synths, three languages and a drum machine.” An abundance of highlights resonate throughout this stylish, melodic EP.

Opening track “Breakdown” struts a minimalist charm, highlighting haunting vocals that alternate between lush whispers and ardent spoken-word exultations. A single synth line, with a sharp-edged blaster component, bridges Kraut-rock and chip-tune feeling nostalgia. The energy is addictive.

“Komm wir tanzen” touts a more expansive briskness, paying tribute to ’80s New Wave. An infectious bass line drives alongside confident German vocals, with sporadic flourishes of percussive evolution signaling a hooky unveiling. Closing track “Imagination” shifts to the French language, inducing a spell-like trance with its more prominent chord changes and more singing-formed vocal delivery; an Italo-disco energy charms on this one. The EP’s three tracks all flaunt different aesthetical personalities, and thoroughly succeed.

“Komm wir tanzen” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
