A chilling synth-laden soundscape mingles with ghostly vocals on the enthralling “I Drink Underwater,” the latest single from New York-based artist Shemona. The endeavor represents the second project from artist Samantha Goldman, following Ariel Gold. Goldman’s talent for textured modern soundscapes combines with previous classical training as a cellist, bridging various musical worlds to result in a sound with ample atmosphere and melodic intrigue.

Nocturnal synth tones and a background quivering creep forward amongst sporadic percussion, with the initial vocal layers fading into a haunting spaciousness. A bass-y embrace coalesces with wordless vocal haunts, driving into the “don’t wanna make a big deal,” spacey synth-forward direction. A spoken-word lushness follows, evolving into a second half that furthers the track’s blissfully atmospheric spell. The track precedes an upcoming album, self-produced by Goldman and mixed by Kiri Stensby (Eartheater, Lolahol, LEYA).

Goldman describes the track as “a sonic painting of an otherworld where yearning shapes the landscape and reality and fantasy become indistinguishable.”
