Naomi Pacifique – ‘look, the wind is coming for us’

An album full of riveting soundscapes lush, escapist immersion, look, the wind is coming for us is the debut full-length from Swiss-Dutch artist Naomi Pacifique. Spacious in its range of understated vocals, intriguing synth swells, and inventive rhythmic unveilings, the album excels in its ability to transport listeners to another place entirely. Specific places of inspiration include “the Amazon rainforest, Berlin, Amsterdam and Donostia.” Pacifique notes that the release “is greatly influenced by spiritual ecology.”

Highlights are numerous throughout the 13-track listening experience. “we stopped in the night” is exemplary of the narrative-friendly atmospheric prowess, conveying a night-trip amidst twangy guitars and nonchalant vocals — resembling a stroll through an island paradise, accompanied by solely the moonlight’s glow. Elsewhere, the epic “somewhere between eating and dreaming” intertwines atmospheric guitar lines with twinkling additions, its guitar fuses, glistening keys, and wandering structure reminding fondly of Animal Collective.

From the minimalist spoken-word dreaminess of the concluding “hello” to the hypnotic rainforest-like ambience within “sayang,” look, the wind is coming for us proves marvelous in its atmospheric constructions and heady textural pursuits.

“are we desiring machines” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2023’ Spotify playlist.
