Paolo Ruiu – “Low”

London-based artist Paolo Ruiu impresses with his new Low EP, touting a murky vein of rock that induces a suavely memorable effect. The opening, self-titled track concocts a psych-friendly spell with the brooding bass-driven hop alongside Ruiu’s darkly entrancing vocal presence. The backing ominous textural effect adds enjoyably, especially upon the bolstering guitar effect at the one-minute mark.

The EP’s four other tracks impress similarly, ranging from the cavernous retro-pop yearning of “Bones” (reminiscent of the act Dirty Beaches) to the lush dream-pop allure of closing track “Others.” From the murky rock opener to the gentle dreamy caressing of the EP’s closer, Low enthralls throughout.

Ruiu, also of the duo Young Romance, wrote and recorded the EP on “a desk used by Pink Floyd and a Tascam 424 cassette recorder,” — the release described as “a celebration of analogue recording, featuring elements of 70’s psychedelia, lo-fi indie and vocals smothered with waves of echo.”
