The (Definitely Not Too Early) Definitive List of the Top 10 Songs of the 2017 Summer

Tags: song summer

It has been no secret we’ve been #blessed with music these past few weeks. New chart-topping albums and singles have been unbelievably frequent starting with Ed Sheeran’s immensely popular Divide and continuing through Kendrick Lamar’s new masterpiece DAMN.. This influx of phenomenal music got me thinking about which of these hits could outlast the rest and be considered the song of the summer for 2017.  If you’re even remotely as interested as I am, but don’t know where to start, don’t worry fam, I gotchu. So without any further ado, lets get into the list…

10. “Play That Song” by Train

Remember Train? Yeah, so they’re making music again and it’s actually really really good. “Play That Song” comes off of their new album that was released back in January, but Train were not shy about when the album should be listened to. With the album title being a girl a bottle a boat, Train make it clear that the album is meant for summertime. As for the song itself, “Play That Song” has an upbeat and feel-good vibe that’ll make you want to get up and dance. Watch out for this one when it takes off this summer.

9. “Ultralight Beam” by Kanye West feat. Chance the Rapper, The-Dream, Kelly Price, and Kirk Franklin

Huh? A song off of The Life of Pablo? Didn’t that come out like early last year? How could a song off of this album be a potential song of the 2017 summer? All valid questions, but all will be addressed. First, this song is utterly beautiful. Everybody singing in “Ultralight Beam” does a stellar job and when put together, the song becomes an absolute masterpiece. Second, Chance the Rapper, one of the features of the song and one of the most powerful and influential artists of our time, happens to be touring this summer. Because of this, I anticipate “Ultralight Beam” to go through a resurgence in American culture and climb atop the charts yet again this summer.

8. “Line Of Sight” by ODESZA feat. WYNNE & Mansionair

In contrast with “Ultralight Beam,” ODESZA’s potential song of the summer is so new it can still be found on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. Having been released very recently, “Line Of Sight” naturally is yet to garner as much notoriety as the likes of “Ultralight Beam,” however, do not let this discourage you from listening; this song is very good and will become known this summer. Although they aren’t the most consistent of artists, ODESZA has been known to drop absolute fire on occasion and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if “Line Of Sight” becomes one of their best.

7. “First Time” by Kygo & Ellie Goulding

So here’s the thing with this one, it’s not nearly as good as I was hoping for when I saw it was released. Don’t get me wrong, it is still a good song, it’s just that seeing a Kygo and Ellie Goulding collaboration probably got my expectations a little bit too high. Regardless, I do think that a good song by two household names like Kygo and Ellie Goulding has a very good chance of becoming very popular this summer so I would watch out for it. Give it a listen too, at the very least it’s worth 3 minutes and 13 seconds of your life.

6. “Heatstroke” by Calvin Harris, Young Thug, Pharrell Williams, and Ariana Grande

For me, “Heatstroke” was the exact opposite of “First Time.” After seeing it had been released I had relatively low expectations. I thought it was going to be just another typical pop song that’s popular for a week or two then fades away. But oh, was I wrong. Every single feature on “Heatstroke” absolutely nails it. This song is so ridiculously catchy, it would not surprise me at all if it became THE song of the summer. The only slight concern with this song being the song of the summer is that it was released back in March so it may have peaked just a few weeks too early.

5. “HUMBLE.” by Kendrick Lamar

If you haven’t heard this one yet then you really need to get out from under your rock. “HUMBLE.” is vintage Kendrick at his absolute finest and anyone who says otherwise doesn’t know what they’re talking about. The rational concern with HUMBLE. is that it peaked too early to be considered the song of the summer. However, as mainstream as this song may be already, I have a strong feeling it won’t be going anywhere and could even stick around for the entirety of the summer. The NBA has taken this song and essentially made it the unofficial song of the 2017 Playoffs, which gives the song unbelievable exposure as a result, but it also will help keep it relevant at least until the NBA Champions are crowned.

4. “Body Like A Backroad” by Sam Hunt

If you’re not a Country person then skip to #3, but if you are into Country, then I have an absolute gem for you. Sam Hunt seems to have a knack for producing summer hits and from the hundreds of times I’ve listened to this one, it has all the elements to follow the same pattern. The bottom line for Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Backroad” is that it’s really really good and at the very least deserves a listen. The only reason this song may not be considered the song of the summer is because, like a few other songs on the list, it may have peaked a little too early.

3. “Middle Of The Night” by The Vamps & Martin Jensen

Now on to the top three. The Vamps are one of the lesser known artists on the list, yet their song “Middle Of The Night” lands them at #3 on the list of potential songs of the summer. Although not as well known as some of the other artists on the list, The Vamps really know how to make music and their newest single “Middle Of The Night is no exception. Not to mention this song is so new that, like ODESZA’s “Line Of Sight,” it’s still on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. “Middle Of The Night” is an immediate hit across all age groups and is poised to take off this summer. So in the words of G-Eazy, “if you don’t know [it] by now, then you should probably get familiar.”

2. “Despacito (Remix)” by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber

If we’re being honest here, there isn’t much at all separating the top two songs on the list. Here’s the rundown on “Despacito” though: it’s excellent. Before Justin Bieber remixed it, “Despacito” was at the top of the charts in Spanish speaking countries from up North in Spain to as south as Argentina. All this popularity came before Justin Bieber, arguably the world’s most famous artist, was added to the mix. Now, with the inclusion of Justin Bieber, the song has been revitalized in Spanish speaking countries, while also establishing its popularity in non-Spanish speaking countries as well. At the very least, this song will be very popular this summer, while its ceiling is virtually limitless.

1. “I’m the One” by DJ Khaled feat. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne

Just look at the list of talent appearing in this song and it’ll be no surprise why “I’m the One” topped the list of potential songs of the summer. DJ Khaled, love him or hate him, is a top end producer if not the very best. We covered Justin Bieber in #2 saying he may be the most popular artist on the planet right now. Quavo, I actually happen to believe has the best verse in the entire song and, although he may not be as well known in the mainstream, the underground sure knows who he is and after “I’m the One” catches on, he’ll become just as mainstream as most of the other artists on this list. We discussed Chance the Rapper in depth with #9 as being on the cusp of elevating to the highest status of artists and musicians thanks to his summer tour that is currently underway. Lil Wayne is another household name that just by himself can make a song radio-worthy. The fact that Lil Wayne is, in my opinion, the least talented artist on this track speaks volumes about the quality and strength of the artists across the board. So if you haven’t heard it yet, take a listen and enjoy five of the top talents in the music industry all in one place.

So that’s it. As the summer of 2017 rapidly approaches, all the artists mentioned above are here to hopefully make it just a little bit sweeter for ya. As I mentioned at the beginning, we’ve been spoiled with the amount of quality music released lately, we can only hope it continues for as long as possible. Above are my personal the definitive top 10 thus far. So keep these songs on repeat and I hope y’all have a phenomenal summer; enjoy it while it lasts!
