5 acts to watch out for at Citadel Festival 2016

Citadel, the tailor-made festival for lazy Sundays in London, will return to the UK’s capital on Sunday 17 July 2016, bringing with it an exciting array of fun, food, booze, and artsy goodness to perfectly round off your weekend.

Those who don’t fancy squelching around in mud and frolicking in mosh pits needn’t worry, as Citadel Festival is a lot more culturally-driven than most standard festivals. Although Citadel is not solely a music event, the one-day extravaganza boasts an impressive bill of acts: Sigur Ros, Caribou, Lianne La Havas, Calex, Tinariwen, Beardyman, Battles, Submotion Orchestra and loads more are playing at this year’s edition.

Sigur Ros have sold out their other 2 UK dates so this is now the only chance for fans to see them in the UK in 2015, and they’re one of our absolute must-sees this year. Read on to see who else you can’t live without.

Sigur Rós

The Icelandic experimental rock trio were announced as Citadel headliners, much to the delight of attendees. Renowned for their ghostly and somewhat eerie sound, the band are set to hit the Main Stage late on Sunday evening to entertain crowds. Although thousands are set to flock to Citadel, the charismatic threesome are no strangers to performing under pressure. The musicians took the stage at the wedding reception for Joffrey and Margaery on Game of Thrones, which ended in the gleeful demise of the former. While winter is coming in Westeros, let’s hope the guys bring sunshine and good vibes with them this time.

Pierce Brothers

Bringing a little Aussie sunshine to the day’s proceedings will be the Pierce Brothers, who have come a long way from busking on the streets of Melbourne. The twins have taken a D.I.Y approach to the music industry and are not attached to any major label, yet they have graced the stages of festivals all over Europe as well as selling tens of thousands EPs. The pair’s irresistible energy has shaken dancefloors all over the world, so festival goers are definitely in for a lively time.

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats

Nathaniel Rateliff combined his soul roots with enchanting rock elements to serve up the perfect music combination back in 2015 when the group’s eponymous album reached #1 on the US Folk Album chart. Fans of Paolo Nutini, Otis Redding and Van Morrison will be in heaven when the Americans take to the stage, with the soulful assembly proudly and confidently spearheading the nu-soul movement.

Friendly Fires

With their last release way back when in 2011, Citadel sees the eagerly anticipated return of the English band originally from St Albans. The trio, who originally dabbled in indie rock and dance-punk, are looking towards a completely different vibe going forwards. Lead singer Ed MacFarlane has hinted that future releases will bask in psychedelic glory. What’s in store for fans at Citadel then? We’re not sure! Considering the band cite Prince as one of their main influences, however, we’re guessing lots of singing, dancing and possibly some purple rain.

Whilk and Misky

Diversity is the key to producing engaging music. Whilk and Misky do this perfectly. Having been known to try their hand at techno, folk, electronica, and even the blues, the duo really do stand out from the crowd. The double act are professionals in combining tortured lyrics, that bask in soul, with cold and emotionless sounds. It’s the perfect juxtaposition and is one that is sure to completely engage festival attendees on Sunday 17 July.

You can buy tickets for Citadel Festival, which will take place on Sunday 17 July at Victoria Park, London here. Head to citadelfestival.com for full details.
