LIVE | First Aid Kit at O2 Academy Leeds | 8 November 2018

First Aid Kit conclude their latest tour, showing off latest album ‘Ruins’ released earlier this year, the tour itself named from the record’s opening track, ‘Rebel Heart’.

Folk is a bit whimsical, isn’t it. Broken hearts, lost loves, fireside chats, and comfy boots. Twangy guitars and lots of trees.

Leeds is dark, bar the Christmas lights are getting switched on tonight. It’s warm jumpers, first mulled wine of the year…is there a better time of year to see First Aid Kit live than in autumn?

The Söderberg sisters that make up First Aid Kit continue however to shake off the dreamlike and the twee more and more with each record, every show…and folk-country at its most widescreen and rocky is what tonight is about.

It’s a powerful, emotive celebration of First Aid Kit’s fourth record ‘Ruins’, which is essentially a break-up album, but also a story of moving on, its maturity in sound matching the band’s maturity of performance perfectly. Arrangements are deep but seem to come with the most natural of ease, and tonight also features ‘Ugly’ from the band’s ‘Tender Offerings’ EP, also landing earlier this year. Support act and friends The Staves join mid-set for a low-key harmonious cover of ‘Runs in the Family’, originally performed by The Roches.

Sisterly love, ride or die, lives strong as Klara and Johanna Söderberg sing to each other, back and forth, and echoes throughout the room as the raw lyrics of heartbreak drop from their lips. Sepia-toned visuals of the band’s childhood, their travels, recording – everything they have experienced together – acts as a backdrop, and words that can’t be visualised add to the vista. My friends are hugging each other, holding on tight.

The two sisters maintain control of a sizeable stage that sometimes a full band struggle with. Swapping sides, pacing, playing with the backing outfit, constantly moving and keeping the floor alive with occasional Fleetwood Mac feels sounding out the room, the end of the ‘Rebel Heart’ tour closes in Leeds to applause, bows heartfelt.
