NEN EXCLUSIVE | The Sea Atlas rouses the Outer Hebridean shores in new track ‘Goodbye’

Wild and atmospheric is The Sea Atlas, the latest project by Calum Buchanan, was borne of the salty shores around the islands of the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.

Residing in his ancestral home in the North Atlantic, The Sea Atlas skippers boats up and down the West coast of Scotland, working the land on his croft, all the while writing when the storms batter his home the hardest, recording haunting tracks whilst locked away in a cabin on the shores of a sealoch.

You can hear both the energy and serenity of Calum’s surrounding water and wilderness vista in his work, nature and weather together forging the atmosphere that shapes The Sea Atlas.

Releasing a debut EP this October, gruff ‘Goodbye’ is the heartbreakingly rousing title track that is a perfect introduction to this understated, unique artist. It’s analog-sounding slow guitar music to shelter the harshest storms with.

Callum says of the track, “I recorded ‘Goodbye’ at the start of this year in my cabin on my croft, then mixed and mastered it over in Black Bay studios, and I think it’s one of my favourite recent songs. I’d spent a month out in Glasgow where I had a few shows and I wasn’t really enjoying it, so the song started out called ‘I hate Glasgow’ because I’d just been left by someone there and was all sort of burned out. But quickly realised I couldn’t call a song that in a city that I actually liked playing shows in!”

The Sea Atlas releases the ‘Goodbye’ EP on 4 October 2018.
