REVIEW | Grumble Bee's debut release 'Disconnect' has all the feels in all the right places
4.0Overall Score

Grumble Bee fuses a spectrum of genres on his debut release to produce an alt-rock orgy that begs to be repeated over and over again.

This is a release that is still rough around the edges, but is a welcome newcomer in an overcrowded rock scene that’s crying out for something fresh.

Think All That Remains meets Justin Timberlake, meets Fightstar circa 2006, all wrapped up in one five-song-long alt-rock blanket and you have your sound. Throughout ‘Disconnect’, Jack Bennett, aka Grumble Bee, presents gritty yet soulful vocals that leap out on a bed of math-ridden riffs and plunging bass licks that verge on sidling themselves on the heavier side of the spectrum. But then the next minute, you’re barraged with pop-inspired song-writing that begs for a passionate, gut wrenching sing-along in ‘Lapwing’.

It’s Bennett’s canny sense of unpredictability here that makes this first release an addictive listen. Lyrically, Grumble Bee has kept things simple, relying on driving rhythms and sinister string arrangements to convey his emotional message in ‘Lapwing’. He playfully explores different tempos in the space of three minutes in ‘H.D.A.D.C’, while hooking you in with the aforementioned vocal prowess in the lead track and first single ‘Sky Writer’, that leaves you yearning to press play all over again.

Soaring choruses, heavy riffs and intricate time signatures are clearly something that Grumble Bee does well, it’s just a shame there’s only five tracks here to keep you satiated, eagerly awaiting a full length release.
