REVIEW | Soccer Mommy impresses with her mini-album 'Collection'
4.0Overall Score

Having built a name for herself online, Nashville’s Soccer Mommy releases a mini-album with ‘Collection’.

Having attracted the attention with her DIY bedroom releases, Soccer Mommy sees her demos and some new material compiled for this debut release.

The project of nineteen year-old Sophie Allison, Soccer Mommy is a Nashville native, NYU student and all-round musician. Over the past few years Sophie has been a DIY musician where she has self-recorded and released tracks for free on her Bandcamp page, building up a great reputation and receiving attention from Fat Possum records, who are releasing her mini-album ‘Collection’.

The eight track album showcases Soccer Mommy’s sound, style and lyrical genius. Each lyric fits with the last as if it’s a missing piece in a jigsaw, making an overall lasting impression, and a fantastic impression at that. The first single from the album is ‘Out Worn’ a typical indie-rock track consisting of strong guitars, layered with drums and riffs, joined by Sophie’s angelic vocals. The whole track doesn’t break her reputation of being an incredible artist.

Soccer Mommy recently revealed the visuals for the opening track on ‘Collection’, ‘Allison’. These visuals help to show the bitter sweet feeling of hurting someone you love while pursuing your own dreams, accompanying the delicate lyrics in the song to portray this topic. ‘Allison’ is a calmer indie-rock track, but still has the hit of strong guitars and beats throughout. The video accompanies the song as it is very simple but fits perfectly to the track. Vaguely resembling The Japanese House and Marika Hackman with the chilled out, folksy vibes resonating throughout.

Each track on ‘Collection’ opens with a slow guitar solo, then joined by vocals, drums and other percussion. As well as this, each track displays Sophie as a fully-formed artist, mature far beyond her years while she sings of toxic relationships, infatuations, and the experiences of a teenage girl. You can also sense the freedom and joy in her teenage years and early adulthood throughout. As much as critics say guitar music is dying out, it certainly isn’t. ‘Collection’ just shows that as long as teens have the access to a guitar, emotions and a way of recording tracks, guitar music will never die.
