Parisian duo 99 Trees have shared exclusively with NEN the inspirations behind their debut EP release, with a playlist made of songs from musicians or bands “who don’t feel like showing their faces to the world, just like us.”
With ’21st Century’ recently released, the guys have put together an eighteen track playlist providing an insight into the influences heard throughout their debut EP, which we said “builds like a look-back through the decades,” and is “an exquisite blend of sounds”.
Speaking us through the playlist choices, the band explains, “Timeless classics to more underground stuff, from rock to electronic music through hip-hop, from the 60s to the 2010s, with a couple of songs in French getting funny absurd but rather true lyrics ‘I’ve stopped smoking pot’ followed by ‘I start smoking pot again’, you’ll find a selection of tracks we love or we have loved at a moment in our lives, and that have more or less obviously influenced us. We hope you will like it.”

99 Trees are, in their own words, “An alt rock duet and we just don’t want to show our real faces. This might be out-of-date at a time when we are all overwhelmed with image. But, believe it or not, we just want people to focus on our music.”
Revealing they are both vegetarian and “very careful about the environment”, the duo explained their image choice, “We got this idea of getting plant heads, like a man might have a cabbage head. French humour, sorry mates, no doubt you know this classic Serge Gainsbourg album, ‘L’Homme à tête de chou’. We just wanted to offer a playlist made of songs from musicians or bands who don’t feel like showing their faces to the world, just like us.”
