On The Ripple Desk - A Vinyl Excusion: Featuring Judas Priest and Motorhead/Girlschool

Back at the piles by the desk.  Keeper or Tosser . . .we'll decide together.

Judas Priest - 50 Heavy Metal Years of Music

By no means an essential Judas Priest collection, but still worthwhile for a smattering of unexpected tracks along with some good live performances.  Some of the live tracks are not the best recordings, having a bootleg feel to the collection, making the whole thing feel somehow illicit.  Still.  It’s Judas Priest.  It’s good.

Question is, is it essential?  And the answer is a definite no.  Verdict.  I'll keep it for now, but when space runs short, this will be one of the first albums pulled off my shelves and sold back to second hand.

Verdict: Keeper

Motorhead/Girlschool (aka Headgirl) - St Valentine's Day Massacre

Just a nuclear burst of fun. The infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre 10” with the merged forces of Motörhead and Girlschool. The bands recorded together on a cover of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' "Please Don't Touch" which rips.  Perhaps more fun, the bands took turns covering each other, with Motörhead performing Girlschool's "Emergency" and Girlschool playing Motörhead's "Bomber" which may be the best Motörhead cover of all time.

The EP was recorded while Motörhead's drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor was unavailable, so Girlschool drummer Denise Dufort played on all three songs. The artwork features the two bands dressed as prohibition era gangsters and their molls.  Definitely worth the find and if you’re like me, you’ll pass the 7” and go for the 10” -- Verdict: Keeper
