KEITH, THE ODD's JANUARY 2018 PICKS

Here it comes, another completely unnecessary list of bands! Every month I'll be looking at the top three bands, of those I've personally reviewed, that I feel are stand outs. I've not listened to every band that comes my way, there isn't enough hours in the day. This is strictly opinion based, so feel free to leave your favorites in the comment section if you'd like.

COFFIN TORTURE - DISMAL PLANET
This album has been all the talk lately and with good reason. Coffin Torture's Dismal Planet is a ghastly and innumerable force, offeringing filthy downtrodden sludge that gets greasy little computer trolls like me adjective happy. That out of the way, it's a genuinely fantastic record with mile-high riffs, and enough variety to keep things nice and spicy.

ARKETH - 12 MOONS COMES THE WITCHES BREW
Experimental Black Metal isn't exactly that rare, but Arketh sets out to 'make things feel old' and it really does. The music of Arketh feels like an artifact, like something you must dig deeper in hopes of finding some deeper meaning. Really, 12 Moons feels like it shouldn't work - but it does. I feel the album stands out for its bizarre and original nature. The general bravery that must have went into the creation of this music is beyond anything I could fathom.

MOTHERSLUG - THE Electric Dunes OF TITAN
While the previous two albums are more grim and fantastical, Motherslug takes a scifi approach to their work. There is a fair amount of talk about the cosmos here, but what really pushes the themes of 'The Electric Dunes of Titan' forward is the down-trodden look at it all. Things are chuggy, delightful, and carry a rock influence that further strengthens the 'forever on the road' feeling, only this time it's in space.
