Gig review – Boris at the Sydney Opera House 05/06/2022

Clip by HonkeyxDong

We just made it to the Opera House for Boris, missing just a minute or two. I had little to go on, not knowing the band, their history, or that they were even playing until I was offered a ticket.

I did know that the friends of mine who had given me the ticket were long-time fans and had seen them many times and this show was the for their thirtieth anniversary and they would be performing their new album, Heavy Rocks.

Nothing prepared me and I was thoroughly exhilarated. This show brought back my faith in music, a little strained by the last few years.

The Studio at the Opera House was kitted out as part of Vivid and this added an extra dimension to the show. Standing in a packed room, watching a band that phased in and out of sounding like a proto punk band into atmospheric psychedelic sounds scapes made me immediately think that this was what those Middle Earth Sessions in London were like in the late sixties. Powerful music, played by exceptional skilful musicians, an amazing light show, and smoke machines that seemed to aim the clouds directly at you at head height like something out of an eighties horror film.

After the encore, we checked out their pedal boards. They got, and maintained, a perfect sound for the entire show, it was a little surprising the number of pedals used so subtly.

I was totally blown away, loving every minute of the show. I knew Boris were going to linger for some time.
