A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Bail to Mrs Maryam Sanda, who was alleged to have killed her husband, Bilyamin Bello, son of former PDP National Chairman, Mohammed Bello.

Sanda was remanded in Suleja Prisons on November 24, 2017, for allegedly killing her husband at his Maitama home in Abuja, by allegedly stabbing him several times based on allegations of infidelity after seeing a text message on his phone.

He was later rushed to the hospital where he eventually died.

The ruling judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu, on Wednesday granted the defendant bail on health grounds – as she is ill and pregnant and requires medical attention – following a fresh application for bail argued by her counsel, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), having denied her bail on three previous occasions.

The judge had at the last sitting adjourned trial to March 19 for definite hearing after dismissing Maryam’s last bail application of February 6.

However, Daudu again approached the court with a fresh bail application and asked for an early date to move it, which was opposed by counsel to the prosecution, CSP James Idachaba.

But this time, Justice Halilu said the court was satisfied with the health reasons canvassed for Maryam, who is said to be over three months pregnant and also asthmatic.

The judge held that the police were not able to counter the claims that the prisons’ health facilities could not take care of Maryam’s conditions.

Part of the conditions attached to the bail included a requirement that the defendant provided two sureties who must deposit their title of landed property ownership in Abuja.

Maryam’s father was also required to enter into an undertaking to always provide her in court throughout the trial.
