Straight From New York, Meet MIC RENAISSANCE!

What first drew you into music?

What first drew me into Music was my family. My mother would play records in the house by Marvin Gaye, Chaka Khan, Sade etc. My father was a big Prince fan and my brother would bring home a lot of Hip-Hop anyone from Mos Def, Nas, Jay-Z and many more. I just soaked it all in like a sponge.

Listening to your music we can tell you love incorporating interesting new sounds and techniques within each track! What inspires you to experiment and evolve?

Whatever I’m experiencing in life at the moment inspires me to experiment and evolve. Traveling is another way I get inspired. Being around different cultures and people and hearing new sounds.

It seems like you already found your signature sound  Do you have any tips for upcoming musicians that can’t seem to find their own sound?

Like any craft of skill, you have to hone it and continually practice. Athletes train, writers write, doctors practice ,you get the picture. Your signature sound will come as long as you keep at it.

Your track “Lena Horne” is your best track in our opinion! From its artwork to the Incredibly powerful sound we absolutely love it. Could you tell us more about the story behind this track? Also, what is your creative process like?

Thank you. “Lena Horne” is about being true to yourself. Regardless of what your friends or family or society wants you to be. Just be yourself, I know that may sound cliche but it’s the absolute truth. When I wrote it I had a juxtaposition in my head of artists today compared to the artists of yesterday. I feel that overtime we lost that dignity and self respect.

As far as my creative process is concerned I have to be isolated, away from the outside world. I draw inspiration when I’m out and about but when it’s time to write it’s just me and the notebook. I have to really be drawn to piece of music that would compel me to write. Everything after that is feeling. Once I’m really feeling something it comes naturally and effortless.

What are your musical goals for the future?

I want to continue to connect with fans and have my message resonate with them. I want to tour the U.S. and overseas. I want to be recognized by my heroes in rap and be regarded as a great lyricist. Ultimately I just want to make great music that the people will love.

What do you have planned for the coming months? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?

I have a project coming out in January 2020 which is inspired by a movie score composed by Jon Brion. The project is a culmination of the last 10 years of my life. It wasn’t by design or premeditated that I would finish it in 10 years. It was something that I revisited every now and then. I don’t like to put a time stamp on my music. I like for it have a timeless feel.
