“Pori/Malmi” is a new great release of “Fiasko Records” label. An album is based on free improvisation and avant-garde jazz. The roots of avant-garde jazz connected to modern innovations and the main tendencies of contemporary experimental jazz are the fundamental basics of “Mikko Innanen 10+” ensemble. This ensemble is consisted of large group of great jazz masters – it’s Mikko Innanen (alto, baritone and sopranino saxophone), Pauli Lyytinen (tenor and soprano saxophone), Jussi Kannaste (tenor saxophone), Verneri Pohjola (trumpet), Magnus Broo (trumpet), Jukka Eskola (trumpet (#3-6 only), Jari Hongisto (trombone), Juho Viljanen (bass trombone), Seppo Kantonen (piano), Eero Tikkanen (double bass), Ville Herrala (double Bass (#1-2 only), Antti Lötjönen (double bass (#3-6 only), Ulf Krokfors (double bass (#3-6 only), Joonas Riippa (drums) and Mika Kallio (drums).

Bright exclamations, driving riffs, Expressive remarkable melodies, wide rhythmic section and gorgeous background contain the fundaments of multi-layed pattern. All compositions of “Pori/Malmi” are based on the fusion of avant-garde and experimental jazz. Fantastic instant improvising, collective improvisations, spontaneous solos, home-made, specific or extended playing techniques, rare combos, moody stylistic allusions to moving bebop, aggressive hard bop, or any other jazz style – these are the main compounds which make an effort to driving, dynamic and expressive sound. An innovative instrumental section is created – it’s made from extended, experimental and home-made playing techniques, suggestive and original ways of improvising developped by improvisers. The compositions have a difficult and universal structure – all four orchestra’s sections are bright and highly contrasting to each other. The music of “Mikko Innanen 10+” is especially bright, emotional and driving. Vivid, bright, light and passionate saxophones of various kinds brings life, joy and energy to the compositions. The improvisers go through different moods – from relaxing, sweet and romantic pieces it gets solemn and tight, silent and contemplative or calm and meditative. When it rises on striking attacks, sparkling riffs, hysteric exclamations with shrieky persecuting tunes, sharp aggressive solos or expressive melodies tinged with transcendental charming passages. The changes of moods, expression, masterful virtuosity and drive make an interesting, bright and luminous sound of reeds. Powerf and radiance comes from brass section – shrieky, explosing and expressive trumpets, cracking heavy trombones and extremely deep bass trombone turn the compositions into full blasts of energy. The musicians create a real storm of sounds by using different kinds of characters, expressions and ornaments. Furiously rapid ornaments, dizzy passages, hot growls, frantic riffs, driving solos, passionate melodies, buzzings, frottings and other strange timbres are the main elements of trumpets improvisations. Rising engaging solos grow out to wild perturbations, roaring blow outs and full blasts of energy – these elements have an effective and impressive sound. Deep, heavy, cracking and rigorous sound is made by trombones and bass trombone. That makes a deep and stable bass line and is connected to radiant culminations, breaking sessions, sparkling riffs and tremendous melodies. Expressive melodies, booming culminations and light passages are the main elements of piano improvisations – here driving solos, flowing ornaments and impressive free improvisations tinged with persecuting sequences, exciting rhythms, dynamic series and other elements make an engaging and fantastic sound. A strong bass line is created by a large section of double basses. The section of double basses is simply exciting and bright – here deep and solemn solos, strange timbres, lyrical contemplations, astonishing sonoristic experiments and special effects are suddenly changed by rising riffs, blooming melodies, suggestive solos, hot thrills, vibrant sessions, radiant perturbations, minimalistic samples or any other elements. That makes an effort to effective and vital sound. Steady beats, calm static series, monotonous tunes connected to expressive bebop, complicated aggressive hard bop rhythms, dynamic and hysteric riffs, perturbations, breaking sessions and impressive improvisations – that’s the base of independent, luminous and driving rhythmic section. The music of this album is created by a large group of talented and great jazz masters who are using their creativity, splendid virtuosity, telephatic corresponding and original style to create an impressive and expressive sound.
