Jacques Demierre – “THE WELL-MEASURED PIANO” (Creative Works Records, 2019)

“THE WELL-MEASURED PIANO” was recorded by pianist Jacques Demierre. The Music of this pianist, composer and improviser is based on evocative ideas of contemporary academical, electroacoustic and experimental music, so as electronics, free improvisation and the basics of experimental jazz. Pianist always tries to create something new and modern – he’s exploring new ways of playing, using originall, evocative and modern ideas, doesn’t avoid to use drastic, extravagant or weird musical decisions and integrate it to his music. He does all that with passion, expression, wide musical knownledge and masterful virtuosity. Jacques Demierre collaborated with Barre Philips, Urs Leimgruber, Thomas Lehn, Axel Dörner, Jonas Kocher, Christian Marclay, Martial Solal, Radu Malfatti, Joëlle Léandre, Fritz Hauser, Andrea Parkins, Sainkho Namtchylak, Lou Mallozzi, Urs Blöchlinger, Irene Schweizer, Hans Koch and other famous improvisers and composers.

“THE WELL-MEASURED PIANO” is based on evocative ideas, original experiments and modern conception. It shows the main capacities and the basics of composer’s improvising style. All music is based on experimental ideas, bright and independent melody line, usual composing forms of classical music mixed together with open forms and free improvisation. Composer is paying much attention to the sound and all its components – he’s trying to explore the new fields of technical abilities and get out of sound’s comfort zone. And he manages to do it just fine – the music has an innovative instrumental section based on experimental, home-made, unusual and specific ways of playing ,extended playing techniques mixed up together with traditional, suggestive and very well-known ways of playing. Sonoristic experiments are used everywhere – strange timbres, special effects and coloristics of all ranges create huge range of colors and tunes. Jacques Demierre is using playing, improvising and composing techniques of all ranges – his music is based on free improvisation, Contemporary Academical Music and experimental jazz, but also is related to the roots of 1960’s avant-garde jazz, contemporary modern jazz, minimalism, serialism and other similar styles of modern classical music. The composing techniques of all ranges are gently brought together. The music has huge range of emotions, as well. Musician is going through all types, zones and moods. From silent relaxing pauses music gets minimalistic and ascetic, sometimes – rough, tight and repetitive. Sharp tunes, hysteric frantic chords sequences, strange timbres and unusual sounds are extracted here. When pianist dives in abstract free improvisations filled with contrasts and turns. From sophisticated, repetitive, sometimes dark and heavy episodes, he moves to vivid episodes played in light, vivid and exciting mood. Here he runs on striking culminations, roaring riffs, driving transcendental passages, passionate glissando by illustrating them with ornaments, textures and timbres of all ranges. The music of this album shows the best capacities of Jacques Demierre’s music – he mixes up together the basics of classical and contemporary academical music, evocative ideas, fascinating experiments and impressive free improvisations, as well as masterful virtuosity, bright and suggestive playing manner. Finally that makes original, emotional and expressive sound.
