Bowlcut – “Semaphore” (Amalgam, 2018)

“Semaphore”was released this year by “Amalgam”. Album was recorded by “Bowlcut”, which members are three interesting and evocative avant-garde jazz masters – Jake Wark (tenor saxophone), Matt Murphy (guitar, electronics, cassette tape) and Bill Harris (drums, percussion, microkorg). The improvisations by these three musicians are filled with live, interesting, dynamic and expressive sound. Musicians succesfully combine together acoustic and electronic nstruments, tape recordings, electronic music sounds, musical experiments and many other Elements. All these elements are the basics of their improvisations. Each of the musicians has their own playing style, unique sound and specific playing manner. They are willing to create different and original sound, expand the ordinary ebilities of their instruments. The improvisations are contained by many different music elements. Expressive, vivacious, turbulent, energetic and dynamic solos are combined together with calm, relaxing and peaceful episodes. The sudden twists, turns and colorful variety of musical expressions, playing techniques and other musical language elements are masterfully combined together. Musicians had been improvising together many times – even though their playing highly differs from the others, their collective improvisations is the masterful and organic synthesis between various music styles, expressions, moods, feelings and sounds.

The compositions of this album are based on avant-garde jazz elements. Avant-garde, jazz, electronic music, tape recordings, field recordings, evocative musical experiments and rich musical language are all the main elements which effect the most whole sound of the album. Musicians trying out new and experimental ways of playing, organically combines together absolutely different and independent music episodes. This music isn’t based on memorable, loud, powerful and expressive melodies – the main and the biggest attention is paid for search of new timbres, strange sounds, inventive and experimental musical decisions and many other similar elements. The main musical pattern is based on abstract structure – independent and separate melodic elements, scales, rhythms and sounds are gently combined together. Saxophone solos by Jake Wark bring evocative and interesting sound. Silent, abstract, relaxing, peaceful and subtle solos are gently combined together with loud and turbulent episodes filled with expressive and passionate melodies, and high variety of unusual timbres. Musician experiments in all fields of musical language – he try out specific playing techniques, combines together separate and repetitive melodic and rhythmic elements and searches for new and strange timbres. Experimental playing techniques are masterfully combined together with traditional ways of playing. Glissando, expressive arpeggios and wild fast passages, noisy blow outs and many other playing techniques create the colorful and gorgeous variety of different sounds and extraordinary timbres. Saxophone melodies are highly contrasting with electronic music elements, which also are frequently used inthis album. Tpe recordings, unusual timbres, computer devices, field recordings, sonic system experiments and many other electronic music elements are controlled and created by guitarist Matt Murphy. His guitar melodies are full of expressive solos, vivacious and striking melodies, sound experiments and dynamic rhythmic. Guitar and saxophone melodies are put against huge variety of electronics and are colorfully illustrated by its unusual sounds, voice elements and experimental playing techniques. Bill Harris percussion and drums section is firm and solid – it’s full of dynamic and different rhythms, original and gorgeous percussion sounds, powerful drum rolls, wild fast arpeggios, vivacious passages and other elements. All three improvisers create interesting, dynamic and passionate improvisations, which have innovative, interesting and vivid sound.
