Circa Waves - Different Creatures

Circa Waves
After the success of their debut album ‘young chasers’, Liverpool indie pop band Circa Waves have released their second record which features eleven new tracks including their most recent singles ‘Wake Up’, ‘Stuck’ and 'Fire That Burns' which is a collaboration song with American rock band PVRIS.

Circa Waves are seemingly taking a new direction with their sound and have swapped out poppy, sunny guitar riffs and uplifting catchy lyrics about love and the summer for a much deeper, darker and more electric sound.

Their first album contains massive hits such as 'T-Shirt Weather' and 'My Love', but after listening to 'Different Creatures', it is clear their second album is unlikely to have the same impact. While the record is full of rocky, edgy guitars and a much stronger, noisier sound than their first album, it lacks catchy, memorable songs that would be stuck in your head all day.

The first song is their single 'Wake Up', with punchy guitars and packed with energy it starts the album off with with a bang before moving onto a second song featuring PVRIS which is equally as exciting. However, after an uplifting and promising start to the record, the fourth track 'Out On My Own' is much slower and calmer which is slightly anti-climatic to have so early on in the record.
The album then slightly picks up with title track 'Different Creatures' before soon featuring another slow song 'Love's run out'.

After waiting over two years for a second release, the record as a whole seems very average and never gets going which is disappointing when listening back to some of their old stuff which everyone seems to have really loved. Circa Waves moving away from their beloved indie tunes to take a new root may not have been their smartest move, but it will be interesting to see if they have a third album and which direction they continue in.

Circa Waves have made no secret that one day they want to be releasing massive tracks and headlining festivals but considering the quality of their most recent release it’s clear they have a long way to go before taking over the world.
