Exclusive Q&A With Miles Graham As He Releases 'Love For The People'

Miles Graham is an emerging talent right now! This is not a bold statement, but more a fact. The Irish born singer-songwriter has been lauded by BBC Radio 6 DJ Cerys Matthews and the late Sir Terry Wogan, where he appeared on his last show. As well as that, 2018 is shaping up to be a busy year for the singer, who recently featured and co-wrote the underground Ibiza dance anthem '1994' with L’Tric, which is just short of 3 million Spotify plays.
‘Love for the People’ is the first of a series of releases which will arrive throughout 2018 and next year. Including collaborations with stars like Don Diablo and his single ‘Bright Skies’, which Miles has co-written, and will be released next year. He has already received critical acclaim for the hugely successful 'Let It Shine' and now releases his latest single 'Love For The People'. An upbeat, soulful outing that oozes heart and full-throttled passion.
The song begins with a succulent bass line that builds nicely up to the intro where Graham’s strong and powerful vocals come riding in. The tempo continues to slowly build itself up with a combination that incorporates several formulas, including handclaps and acoustic guitar line, before the chorus strikes and captures the listener with a catchy bass line and incisive lyrics. This is a song that reverts to old-school Northern soul with a swinging rhythm. The inclusion of backing vocals and the overall feel-good tone has all the ingredients to support praise heaped on Miles Graham.
I had the opportunity to ask Miles Graham about 'Love For The People', his ambitions, dream collaborations, and what is next for the singer. See the full interview below:
How would you describe your sound to new listeners?
Most artists find it really hard to describe their own music, me included. Some people have said it's soulful, All I can say is each song has a narrative concept somewhere from my own imagination. Story songs, blood sweat & tears and can be from a dark place, but somehow, somehow it always has HOPE. I'm not sure entirely how.
Could you tell me a little bit about your new single 'Love For The People'?
The sound of this record is also a personal treat for me as my influences from Al Green, Bill Wither, Smokey Robinson and those Northern Soul records came into play. We still manage to keep it a bit modern though.
What is the message you would like to get across to listeners through your songs?
Dance, sing, laugh, be hopeful in the face of adversity.
What is inspiring you to write at the moment?
This is a song again written from a low point for me, the lyrics were written with no money in my pocket, no food on the table when the people in charge of the place seemed to only want to kick people when they are down. that's how I felt..... and yet HOPE in the sentiment of the song.
Who were your main influences in music growing up?
Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Otis Reading & Motown records rung through my household from a very young age. Michael Jackson's way with melody. I could name so many more.
Top 5 artists/tracks of the past year?
I like music that's fresh and has soulful element also. I'm very inspired by dance & house music due to my recent collaborations with L'Tric, Tom Budin and now Don Diablo.
I would have to say Don Diablo for his pure innovation of music productions.
Track 'Cutting Shapes'
RagnBone man for the new soul. 'Human'
Pharrell Williams/Calvin Harris 'Feels'
Matt Simmons 'Place I go'
? I know there are so many more
Cerys Matthews and the late Sir Terry Wogan heaped great praise on you. What impact has that had on your career so far?
It's always nice when someone with credibility in the arts praises your work or any person for that matter, but people do stand up a listen a bit more those beautiful people said good thing. :-) I'm super grateful.
Dream collaborations?
Pharrell Williams
Mark Ronson
Bill Withers (Big big dream)
Quincy Jones
Annie Lennox ( Such an amazing lyricist & singer & legend)
What is a typical day in the life of Miles Graham?
Varies on each day, Promo, Writing, collab, Studio, Family.
What is your Favourite TV show?
Big, big dream would be 'Later with Jools' as I'm sure it is for most artists living in UK or Ireland or around the world. It's such a brilliant show and I've been introduced to so many diverse artists from watching and listening to it!.. the dream continues! ....Aside from that, SoccerAM. I love my footie.
Guilty pleasure?
Cool pint of Guinness
And finally, what is next for Miles Graham?
Promote 'Love For The People' available on Spotify right :-) and finish my album this year! Don't forget my Dance collab will be out 9th Feb 2018 also. It's called Bright Skies (the bit you know) Don Diablo ft. Miles Graham GO and check it out!!!
