Kev Minney's Debut Album 'Stories Of The Sky' Is Cosmic

Kev Minney is an independent acoustic musician and singer-songwriter from Northampton who has released his debut album, ‘Stories Of The Sky’, which is inspired by his passion for astronomy.
Minney didn't begin his music career until he was 30 after overcoming a stutter and severe stage fright in order to perform. Fortunately, Kev Minney is an ambitious character and filled with drive he spent the first two years practicing for 6 hours a day before going to work as a guitar teacher in the evenings.
He says, "I have an obsessive nature, when I want to achieve something, I think of little else, everything around me relates to what I'm focused on".
When Nasa's New Horizons was broadcasting photographs of Pluto in 2015, Minney was fascinated and hugely inspired. He says, "I was in awe at how science could take us as far as 322 light minutes to the most distant planet in our solar system. At that point it felt like that's how far I was travelling to achieve my artistic ambitions!”
Without the backing of a record label, Minney worked hard to pitch his project to the Arts Council who granted him an award in 2016, enabling him to make the album independently.
After releasing some captivating singles and visuals, Kev Minney has finally released his debut album, ‘Stories of the Sky’ and the stark yet stunning black and white video-single 'Like I Always' which is produced by the mercury-nominated Jag Jago.
“I’m very happy and proud to release my debut album,” Minney explains, “It started with just one song 'Dark Stars’. I was showing an interest in astronomy, so naturally that inspired my songs. I met up with local producer Jag Jago, who has a reputation for perfectionism and a high work ethic.  Straight after we recorded that first song, I knew I wanted to record a whole album.  The next songs ‘Just Another Day’, ‘Gravity’, and ‘Can you feel it too’ were all space-inspired and naturally linked in well.
‘Chaos in the Sky’ is a personal song to me,” he adds, “It represents the overcoming of any difficulties that life can present. I didn’t want to hold anything back: I have always believed in wearing everything on a sleeve”.
Listening to ‘Stories of the Sky’ feels somehow intimate as if you are at a Sofar Sounds or somewhere dark with deep, comfy sofas and flickering candles. Minney is fond of incorporating subtle piano chords, soft, warm strings and dissonant harmonies which create an atmospheric feel. It is an unpretentious album; heartfelt and honest and you lose yourself in it while you are listening. Sometimes a distortion will be thrown into the mix to catch you unawares and make it not so plain sailing. The tracks are melancholic a lot of the time, but with beautiful embellishments that make them truly unique. With tracks titled 'Chances', 'Time,' 'Fairy Tales and Chains', 'Stardust' and 'Chaos In The Sky,' Kev Minney is telling a story through mellow and reflective orchestral folk blues, one that weaves blissfully and effortlessly.
